'Shrek' spinoff 'Puss in Boots' tops box office (AP)

NEW YORK ? The "Shrek" spinoff "Puss in Boots" landed on all fours, opening with an estimated $34 million to top the box office.

The DreamWorks 3-D animated film, distributed by Paramount Pictures, proved the popular character voiced by Antonio Banderas was a big enough draw outside of the "Shrek" franchise. The PG-rated "Puss in Boots" scored with family audiences on the weekend before Halloween.

Paramount was also able to claim the weekend's second top performing more with the low-budget horror flick "Paranormal Activity 3." That film took in $18.5 million in its second week of release, bringing its cumulative total to $81.3 million.

"The Rum Diary," the Hunter S. Thompson adaption starring Johnny Depp, opened weakly, earning just $5 million.

Pasadena police probe possible boot camp abuses

(AP) ? Police will investigate whether a crime occurred at a youth boot camp after videos surfaced showing instructors shouting at a boy wearing a tire around his neck and children being told to drink water until some vomited.

Investigators will question boot camp operator Kelvin "Sgt. Mac" McFarland, police Cmdr. Darryl Qualls told the Pasadena Star-News (http://bit.ly/vtQb7Q ) on Thursday.

"Looking at the video we can only see McFarland, so we will start the investigation with McFarland," Qualls said.

McFarland earlier denied to the newspaper that he appeared in the videos. A call left for him was not immediately returned Friday.

The Star-News this week released short video clips it said were made in 2009.

On one, several instructors in military-style fatigues surround and shout at a boy who is wearing a heavy auto tire. At one point, the boy falls down crying but is ordered to stand again.

In the other, several girls and boys are repeatedly ordered to drink water from colored plastic bottles. Several youngsters vomit.

"I would certainly not subject my son or daughter or any child I know to this type of activity," City Council member Victor Gordo told the newspaper.

"The short clips that I reviewed appeared to be more of a situation of intimidation and humiliation appearing to be employed under the guise of physical activity and discipline," Gordo said.

McFarland runs Family First Growth Camp in Pasadena, which uses tough-love and military-style disciplinary tactics. He was charged earlier this year with child abuse, extortion and other crimes.

Prosecutors contend that he handcuffed a truant 14-year-old girl in May and told her family that she would be sent to juvenile detention unless she was enrolled in his camp. She was never enrolled.

The newspaper said the videos appear to have been made in Pasadena but did not indicate how it obtained them. It did not specify whether the videos were taken at a Family First training session and noted that some children seemed to be wearing T-shirts from another camp.

"Family 1st Growth Camp doesn't believe in corporal punishment, nor will it be tolerated," according to a camp website.

"The young men/women who come to us are good kids who have begun to make some poor choices with friends, school, drugs, alcohol, attitude with peers and family members," the website said. "Through Family 1st, these kids seek out, find, then learn to love themselves so they can love their families and start to move in a positive direction."

A bill introduced earlier this month by Rep. George Miller would require training for boot camp staff. It also would require boot camp instructors to report child abuse and create a federal database where parents can check the credentials of boot camp operators.

"This legislation will help put an end to these horrific abuses that put the lives of too many children in jeopardy," Miller said in a statement.

Chrome Now Syncs Search Engines and Open Tabs [Chrome]

Chrome Now Syncs Search Engines and Open TabsChrome: The auto-detected search engines in Google Chrome are one of those niceties that makes to outshine Firefox among power users (type a few letters, press Tab, then search , but if you move to a different computer, all those shortcuts burned into your muscle memory are useless. Or at least they were. You can now enable search engine (and open tab) syncing in all versions of Chrome.

Here's how to set it up:

1) Visit chrome://flags/
2) Enable syncing search engines and open tabs
3) Go to chrome://settings/personal, click Advanced
4) Make sure the new options are selected
5) Use the same search engine shortcuts everywhere!

The greatest thing about syncing search engines? You can practice the fine art of keyword bookmarking and speed up and eliminate some of those repetitive keystrokes.

In testing, the search engine syncing worked like a charm. I didn't have any luck getting the open tab syncing to work across computers, though, so if you have better luck, let's hear how you got it to work in the comments. The feature isn't yet in the stable release of Chrome, so you need to be living on the bleeding edge of the dev channel to try it out for now. I stand corrected. Many commenters have pointed out that it's available in the stable build as well!

Thanks JoshSurber!

Guest Opinion: Jerry Lewis' Smokescreen Finance Report

By Patrick Kennedy

Votes are pouring in for Olivia Cortes, who paid for her own campaign out of her own pocket. Jerry Lewis states he ?got no money from outside political committees?! Lewis expects us to believe he and his campaign are pristine. Here?s a REALITY CHECK. Someone legally placed signs for Cortes as a private citizen volunteer (did you ever place a bumper sticker on your car, hand anyone campaign material or see someone burning an American flag? What happened to the First Amendment? It?s almost gone, to the Progressive?s delight). The owner of the Cortes signs then got accused of fraud, while a foreign army of leftists invades LD18 in support of Lewis, and that?s supposed to be OK because they are politically correct but a private citizen exercising his or her constitutional right of free speech IS NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT? Who is he trying to phool?

Don?t tell us Lewis is not connected to outside leftist lobbying interests who come into LD18 and attempt to ?influence the outcome of an election?. This is an obvious ploy to overthrow the election process established to take care of business in an orderly way! Why isn?t Lewis demanding they get out and leave the LD18 citizens alone? They have an alternate agenda and found Lewis the ideal ?hopy-changy? candidate who runs on no platform, flip flops on positions but can?t tell you specific reasons to vote for him.

So now we have only one opposition candidate on the ballot just like Soviet elections have, making a mockery of democracy by harassing, intimidating and threatening to hurt and bankrupt any and all other candidates! They have a right to run when their friends urge them to just as Lewis has. We are witnessing the trampling on of our Constitutional rights with impunity because of liberal, activist judges who should be impeached.

Self-righteous Mormon Lewis converts to Alinsky Marxism so LD18 voters will be disenfranchised of their right to vote for any and all candidates under the watchful eye of both a leftist / activist Democrat judge and the ACORN-style community organizers from out of district and out of state.

?Justice has fallen in the streets? but awakened Hispanic voters continue to seal their ?protest ballots? for Cortes and against the smarmy puppet who refuses to cry out with indignation about violations to the U.S. Constitution and the RACISM and ABUSE suffered by his Mormon ex-opponent.

Where is the outrage at the destruction of constitutional rights of our citizens? Disenfranchised voters of LD18 should sue for damages and Cortes should special action the judge and file a civil rights suit. What happened in LD18 is not American politics, it is Alinsky?s Rules for Radicals action in our front yards and banging on our front doors.

Mesa City District 3 Supervisor Dennis Kavanaugh and Petsmart Chairman Francis Philip should extract themselves from the muck and mire enjoyed by the Bill Konopnicki?s who have the worst reputation of favoring outside political committee and leftist special interest groups. Kavanaugh can?t even run his own district in harmony with state law. District 3 used to be a preferential neighborhood and new move-in destination where Mesa Public School reputation for excellence was known nationwide. Now people are moving out; it has been rapidly becoming a ghetto with the nightly police ghetto bird circling overhead in support of 911 calls about criminal activity and drunks sleeping along Main Street.

But lately because of SB1070, Mesa is better than it was two years ago. Littering and graffiti instances are down. Theft of all kinds is down. One third of families have self-deported since the crackdown on illegal activity in the district, not from the City of Mesa, but from the state legislature. Mesa has made itself an unofficial and illegal sanctuary city where the Mesa Police Department refuses to cite Hispanic offenders because they fear the U.S. Department of Justice coming into town with their nationwide program to sue any police department that MIGHT show a pattern of discrimination against a minority.

Lewis won?t stand against the Feds; he is a lackey bean counter who campaigns on ?Why can?t we all just get along?? What we need is a champion for right who has the trenchant zeal of a crusader to lead the fight against the Marxist Federal Administration and Executive Branch in Washington. Oh, we already have one! Lewis and his ilk don?t clean up sleaze and crime?they help to Grind Down America to a third world status and thus help destroy the very republic that elevated them to the stature of liberty which they now enjoy.

No outside connection to leftist thuggery? Jerry, it?s time to be honest and run a truly honest campaign.

You are what you eat: Low fat diet with fish oil slowed growth of human prostate cancer cells

You are what you eat: Low fat diet with fish oil slowed growth of human prostate cancer cells

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

A low-fat diet with fish oil supplements eaten for four to six weeks prior to prostate removal slowed down the growth of prostate cancer cells -- the number of rapidly dividing cells -- in human prostate cancer tissue compared to a traditional, high-fat Western diet.

Done by researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, the short-term study also found that the men on the low-fat, fish oil supplement diet were able to change the composition of their cell membranes in both the healthy cells and the cancer cells in the prostate. They had increased levels of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and decreased levels of omega-6 fatty acids from corn oil in the cell membranes, which may directly affect the biology of the cells, though further studies are needed, said Dr. William Aronson, the study's first author and a researcher with UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The study also found that blood obtained from patients after the low-fat, fish oil diet program slowed the growth of prostate cancer cells in a test tube as compared to blood from men on the Western diet, which did not slow cancer growth.

"The finding that the low-fat, fish oil diet reduced the number of rapidly dividing cells in the prostate cancer tissue is important because the rate at which the cells are dividing can be predictive of future cancer progression," Aronson said. "The lower the rate of proliferation, the lesser the chances that the cancer will spread outside the prostate, where it is much harder to treat."

The study appeared Oct. 25, 2011 in Cancer Prevention Research, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

The study, which evaluated blood samples before and after the diet commenced and examined tissue from the removed prostate, validated previous studies by Aronson and others done on cell lines and in animal models. Aronson said the study using human blood and tissue also proved that the changes prompted by what the men were eating were clearly evident in their prostate tissue - the "treatment" was indeed reaching the targeted organ because of the changes in the prostate cell membrane's fatty acid composition.

"You truly are what you eat," said Aronson, a clinical professor of urology, who also serves as chief of urologic oncology at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center. "Based on our animal studies, we were hopeful that we would see the same effects in humans. We are extremely pleased about our findings, which suggest that by altering the diet, we may favorable affect the biology of prostate cancer."

Aronson measured proliferation, or the rate of prostate cancer cell division, by staining tissue obtained from the radical prostatectomy specimens with an antibody against Ki-67, a protein involved in the cell-cycle progression and growth.

"The percentage of prostate cancer cells that stained for Ki-67 was determined by the pathologist, and this gave us an objective measurement of the percentage of cells that were actively dividing and therefore more aggressive," said Aronson. "Previous studies found that patients with higher levels of Ki-67 in their prostate cancer tissue were more likely to have their prostate cancer progress to advanced stages, and were more likely to die from their prostate cancer. Thus, we are extremely encouraged by our findings that a low-fat diet with fish oil lowered Ki-67 levels and may have the potential to slow the progression of prostate cancer."

Diet studies often are difficult to evaluate because getting patients to comply with dietary changes can be challenging. However, the food eaten by men in both arms of this study was precisely controlled, Aronson said. The meals were prepared by chefs in the UCLA Clinical Translational Research Center and delivered in bulk to study participants several times a week. Participants also met with a dietician, kept food diaries and were required to return uneaten food.

"The key to this study was having the meals prepared and delivered to the study participants," Aronson said. "This resulted in a very high rate of compliance, making the study very well controlled."

The Western diet consisted of 40 percent of calories from fat, generally equivalent to what many Americans consume today. The fat sources also were typical of the American diet, and included high levels of omega-6 fatty acids from corn oil and low levels of fish oil that provide omega-3 fatty acids.

The low-fat diet consisted of 15 percent of calories from fat. Additionally, the men on this diet took five grams of fish oil per day in five capsules, three with breakfast and two with dinner, to provide fish oil omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to reduce the incidence of heart disease and fight inflammation, and inflammation has been associated with certain cancers.

"Preclinical studies suggest that lowering dietary omega-6 fatty acids from corn oil and increasing omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil decreases the risk of prostate cancer development and progression," the study states. "We found this diet intervention resulted in a decrease in omega-6 vs. omega-3 fatty acid ratios in benign and malignant prostate tissue and a decrease in malignant cell proliferation."

Aronson cautioned that he could not recommend dietary changes based on this study because of its short duration and small sample size. However, based on these results he is organizing a much larger study of 100 men with prostate cancers who have elected active surveillance, meaning they're not getting any treatment for their disease but are getting regular biopsies and check-ups.

The future study will randomly divide the men into a low-fat, fish oil supplement group and a traditional Western diet group and follow them for a year to evaluate the diet effects on prostate cancer proliferation.

In naming female CEO, IBM passes gender milestone

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? IBM Corp. has passed a milestone, naming the first female CEO in the company's 100-year history.

The selection of Virginia "Ginni" Rometty, announced Tuesday, is also a statement about the growing influence of women in the top tiers of business. Although women have made momentous strides, breaking through corporate America's "glass ceiling" over the past half century, a woman's ascendance into the chief executive position of a major corporation still holds significance.

Currently, only 16 Fortune 500 companies are led by a woman. Rometty and Heather Bresch, appointed Wednesday as CEO of drug maker Mylan Inc., would make that 18. Both take effect Jan. 1.

Even so, two of the world's biggest technology companies will have female leaders. Last month, Hewlett-Packard Co. named Meg Whitman, former eBay Inc. chief and candidate for California governor, as its CEO.

Their appointments are "setting a fabulous example" in the promotion of female executives, said Jean Bozman, an analyst with IDC who has followed IBM and HP closely for years.

"It does create an environment in which more of these high-ranking women executives can see that's within reach," Bozman said. "The more that happens, the more normal that will be. I think this might be a great sign that we've turned a corner. Certainly the Baby Boomers have wanted this for a long time."

Rometty, IBM's sales and marketing chief, is taking over from Sam Palmisano, who this year turned 60, the age at which IBM CEOs have traditionally stepped down.

Rometty, 54, will be among more than a dozen female CEOs in the Fortune 500. Another prominent female CEO of a technology company is Ursula Burns of Xerox Corp., who has held that title since 2009.

HP had another female CEO, Carly Fiorina, but her tenure ended in acrimony when she was forced out in 2005 over disappointing financials and the fallout from her hard-fought battle to buy Compaq Computer. Yahoo Inc. also ousted CEO Carol Bartz this year.

HP and IBM are bitter rivals that have followed somewhat inverted paths for years.

When IBM was near collapse two decades ago with the eroding dominance of its mainframes, HP thrived with the advent of personal computing and Silicon Valley's dot-com boom. Now the tables are turned ? IBM is thriving while HP is hurting.

Two of technology's most powerful women will square off from sharply different positions.

Rometty will inherit a company in a sweet spot.

IBM, which is based in Armonk, N.Y., has proven resilient in the downturn because of hard decisions it made in the 1990s to focus on the high-margin areas of software and technology services, moving away from computer hardware. Rometty played a leading role in the transformation.

She was instrumental in the formation of IBM's business services division, including overseeing IBM's $3.5 billion purchase of PricewaterhouseCoopers' consulting business in 2002, which is a key element of a strategy that has made IBM a heavily copied company. Rometty joined IBM in 1981 as an engineer.

She is "more than a superb operational executive," Palmisano, who is keeping his job as chairman, said in a statement.

IBM's stock has more than doubled since the depth of the recession in 2008. Meanwhile, HP stock has fallen by about 50 percent.

A series of scandals has led to turmoil at the top of HP, with former CEO Mark Hurd resigning under pressure last year over ethical violations, and his successor, Leo Apotheker, being fired after less than a year on the job after fumbling an important restructuring.

One of Whitman's first moves was to accelerate a decision about whether HP will sell, spin off or keep its personal computer business, the largest in the world by sales. Investors seem undecided about what course they want HP to take. Some analysts worry that Apotheker did irreparable harm to the brand by announcing it was for sale before a buyer had been found, making it potentially hard to sell and hard to keep.

Analysts have generally said that both women are right for their roles ? HP needs Whitman's star power to woo Wall Street while IBM needs a steady operator with broad experience like Rometty to continue IBM's predictable, steady growth.

IBM dates to June 16, 1911, when three companies that made scales, punch-clocks for work and other machines merged to form the Computing Tabulating Recording Co. The modern-day name followed in 1924.

It had a boys' club image but shed it long ago. Rometty's status as a front-runner for the CEO job was a poorly kept secret. Industry insiders have whispered about it for years, and Tuesday's announcement was only a mild surprise because of its timing.

IBM CEOs have traditionally stepped down at 60 years old, but Palmisano had tamped down talk of his retirement, insisting that he wanted to stay on as chief. In rare public comments, he said last year that he was "not going anywhere" and that there's no formal policy at IBM dictating when a CEO should retire.

Bobby Cameron, an analyst with Forrester Research who has worked with IBM in various roles over the years, said that in meetings with Rometty is "engaging" and inquisitive. Her interest in emerging technologies, not just the established sales leaders, is an important characteristic. Cameron thinks she's an ideal choice to continue Palmisano's work.

"I think she's smart. She asks questions; she doesn't just come in with an agenda, and she's interested in the leading edge, not just what's driving volume ? all those things are important for a CEO to have," Cameron said.

Palmisano has the same characteristics, Cameron said.

"I think it will be more of the same, and I think that's a good thing," he said.

Nevertheless, investors' reaction was muted. IBM shares fell 51 cents, or 0.3 percent, to $179.85 in midday trading Wednesday, the first day of trading following the announcement.

Add a Pair of Toolbox Saddlebags to Your Bike or Motorcycle on the Cheap [DIY]

Add a Pair of Toolbox Saddlebags to Your Bike or Motorcycle on the Cheap If the kitty litter bucket set didn't tickle your fancy, perhaps this pair of more normal-looking toolbox saddlebags will inspire you to add some storage to the sides of your bike or motorcycle. They're cheap, easy to attach, offer a lot of storage, and look good at the same time.

Instructables user Kamiana8 wanted a cheap way to add some saddlebags to his motorcycle without spending a lot of money for a custom mount and set of expensive bags. He managed to scrape together the components for this setup for about $20, but he admittedly had some of it in his garage beforehand. He used a pair of standard toolboxes, some hose clamps to attach it to the motorcycle, and modded an old refrigerator rack to make the baskets that the toolboxes would rest in (he notes other similar racks and baskets would work here as well.)

Afterward, he bolted the toolboxes to the racks and attached the racks to the bike with metal hose clips. When finished, the end result is functional, adds a lot of storage, and surprisingly doesn't look out of place at all. We imagine this would be a bit easier with a bicycle, since there are more places to bolt or mount the toolboxes. What do you think, too much effort or a decent DIY project? Share your tips in the comments.

Range Rover sheds pounds, aims to gain share

AP

The new Range Rover Evoque is the smallest and lightest model ever to wear the Land Rover nameplate.

By Paul A. Eisenstein

Few vehicles can match the off-road capabilities of the typical Land Rover sport-utility vehicle.?But when it came time to introduce the new Range Rover Evoque the British maker dug even deeper to reinforce its claims ? more than 100 feet beneath the streets of Liverpool.

The media preview ? staged in a long-abandoned network of railroad tunnels ? was intended to show that the distinctive new Evoque could handle anything the typical buyer would likely run into.?But the reality is that few will ever experience anything rougher than a gravel road or un-shoveled driveway.?So why design a vehicle carrying all the extra hardware ? and weight ? of the typical Land Rover??

While the iconic British brand isn?t likely to abandon the classic SUV that has been its foundation for the last 60 years,?Land Rover is planning some major changes, and the Evoque is the first sign of what?s in store.

Apparently, the new crossover-ute has struck the right chord.? It has been named Motor Trend magazine's SUV of the Year and is a semi-finalist for North American Truck of the Year, an award that will be presented at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

The Range Rover Evoque is the first car-based crossover produced by the luxury brand, now owned by India?s Tata Motors, rather than the classic body-on-frame SUV.? With its funky, coupe-like styling, the new model is both the smallest and, at just north of 3,500 pounds in base configuration, the lightest model ever to wear a Rover badge.?

That reflects the reality of today?s automotive market.?Motorists are generally downsizing as they struggle to deal with crowded city streets and rising fuel prices.?That doesn?t mean they want to give up style, performance, space or functionality, however.?

So while Evoque abandons the low-range gearbox found on the classic Range Rover and other, less expensive Land Rover models, it carries over the Terrain Response Control system that, with the touch of a button, takes the guesswork out of driving on different surfaces, such as mud-and-ruts, gravel, snow-and-ice or standard pavement.?

It does that by revising the settings of all manner of vehicle operations.?In one of the off-road modes, Evoque?s ride height increases by several inches. Throttle response changes appropriately.?In snow, you?ll start out in second gear.?Transmission and brake-intervention systems like ABS and electronic stability control also are reprogrammed for optimum traction and handling.

That dependence on electronic, rather than mechanical, technology will become increasingly apparent in future products, as will the wedge shape of the Evoque, explained Gerry McGovern, the brand?s design director, acknowledging, ?Land Rover needs redefining.?

The process began with the unveiling of the LRX concept vehicle in January 2008 at the North American International Auto Show.? Company officials admit they weren?t sure what to expect, but the strong response to the show car convinced them to move forward with the project that became Evoque,?which was launched while the brand was still owned by Ford Motor Co., then brought to market by Tata, which acquired both Land Rover and sibling British brand Jaguar in March 2008.

?We knew we had something very special on our hands,?something that could change the perception of the brand," said?Land Rover managing director Phil Popham

The buzz kept building as the maker carefully doled out details of the project and by the time of the recent media preview there were already 20,000 orders in hand.? Significantly, 80 percent of those buyers have never before owned a Land Rover product.

Considering initial reviews, the new Range Rover Evoque very well could become one of ? if not the ? best-selling model in the brand?s history.? Long little more than a niche player, Land Rover is aiming to take itself at least a bit more mainstream.? That doesn?t mean it will walk away from classic truck-based SUVs.?Quite the contrary.?

It revealed an all-new concept version of the big Defender model at the recent Frankfurt Motor Show, McGovern describing it as a ?vision of the 21st Century? SUV.?A production version should roll into showrooms in a couple of years.

But even such traditional offerings will undergo some dramatic changes, according to Popham, who revealed a corporate goal of trimming anywhere from 800 to 1,100 pounds of weight off the typical Land Rover product. That will be critical if the marque hopes to meet tough new emissions and mileage requirements going into effect in most of its key markets.

Expect also to see a shift to more high-tech powertrains, he hinted.?There?ll be more diesels ? and very likely a diesel for the U.S. market.? The Range Rover Evoque, meanwhile, will be the first Land Rover offering to get a hybrid-electric drivetrain.? Even conventional gasoline powertrains will be downsized and turbocharged ? like the turbo 2.0-liter direct injection 4-cylinder engine offered in the new crossover.

While rising fuel prices have clearly had an impact on the utility vehicle market, sales have remained surprisingly strong.? But Land Rover officials recognize they can?t keep practicing business as usual.?The new Evoque gives a hint of the alternative future they?re mapping out.

A look at how dealers can profit from Land Rover's winning SUV, with Ryan Ambrifi, Land Rover of Milford, CT managing partner.

NATO: 200 Afghan militants killed, captured

Afghan and NATO coalition forces killed or captured about 200 insurgents in eastern Afghanistan during two operations targeting the lethal Haqqani network, which has links to al-Qaida and the Taliban, the U.S.-led coalition said Monday.

At least 20 insurgents with ties to the Haqqani group were among those killed or captured in the operations conducted during the past week by Afghan security forces with the support of coalition troops, said German Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson, a coalition spokesman in Afghanistan.

About half of the Haqqani fighters were identified as leaders and the other half were bomb makers or individuals who help militants in various ways, such as distributing weapons and supplies, running safe houses or preparing areas for attack.

"Removal of the midlevel cell leaders with their expertise and leadership has significantly disrupted insurgent operations and degrades the Haqqani network's ability to coordinate and execute future attacks against combined team forces and the people of Afghanistan," Jacobson said.

The joint force also seized more than 400 kilograms of explosives, weapons, munitions and computers.

The two operations have ended, but the coalition is continuing its work to disrupt the Haqqani network, he said.

On Sunday, NATO reported that a heavily armed group of Haqqani fighters was the target of an airstrike in Wuza Jadran district of Paktia province. The coalition said several insurgents were killed in the attack, but did not specify how many.

The Haqqani network is based in Pakistan, but operates primarily in Paktia, Paktika and Khost provinces and is blamed for most of the recent high-profile attacks in the Afghan capital.

"Haqqani is not only a terrorist organization, it is a family clan, a criminal patronage network and a terrorist organization," Jacobson said. He said that the Haqqanis aim to have maximum control over eastern Afghanistan and access to Kabul from the south.

"Though their family roots are in Paktika, they are operating on either side of the border. ... Their business is to smuggle drugs, murder and insurgency and their path is extremely bloody."

At the same time as coalition and Afghan forces have stepped up their operations in areas along the Pakistani border in eastern Afghanistan, the U.S. and Afghanistan have urged Pakistan to act against the militants on its side of the border. U.S. officials recently visited Islamabad and Kabul to pressure Pakistan to do more to eliminate militant sanctuaries on its territory.

While NATO presses ahead with its campaigns, several hundred people including students demonstrated at Kabul University against a proposed U.S.-Afghan strategic security agreement that many in the country interpret as affording foreign forces long-term bases in Afghanistan.

The U.S. has said that it is not seeking permanent bases in Afghanistan. Afghan and U.S. officials are still working on the details of the plan that will govern the American troop presence in the country after the international forces' combat mission ends in 2014.

The protest against the plan highlighted the growing frustration felt by many Afghans toward NATO forces who, they argue, have brought little in the way of security or development to the country since the start of the decade-long war that toppled the Taliban. Many of the protesters alleged that the international community wants to exploit Afghanistan's mineral wealth and use the country as a springboard to other nations in the region.

"The fighting is not for bringing peace or stability or security," said 26-year-old university student Sayed Abdullah. "This is only to allow them (NATO forces) to place their feet firmer in our country and then, from here, (they) want to occupy all the central Asian Muslim nations."

The demonstrators, with about 200 to 300 Afghan police looking on warily, hoisted banners that made clear their antipathy for NATO's presence and the proposed agreement.

"We don't want international forces at all. To sit together is the only way to peace," read one. Another said: "Our unity is our strength."

Separately, the coalition reported that a NATO service member died Monday in a roadside bombing in southern Afghanistan. No other details were released.

So far this year, 475 coalition troops have died in Afghanistan.

'Survivor' favorite to run for Indiana governor

Rupert Boneham won over TV viewers during 2004's "Survivor: All-Stars" ? earning a nifty $1 million as the overwhelming choice for fan favorite on the reality show. Now the bushy-bearded Boneham is hoping Indiana voters will find him just as charming.

Boneham, 47, announced Saturday that he's seeking the Libertarian Party nomination for Indiana governor, saying he wants to take on the state's political establishment because he feels voters deserve better.

At a news conference in Indianapolis, Boneham said he's the best candidate to replace Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels, who has reached his term limit and can't run next year, because he's "not beholden to any special interests."

In prepared statements circulated later by his campaign, Boneham said he wants to run as the Libertarian candidate because he thinks Indiana voters deserve an alternative to "the dysfunctional state of our current government."

"I have only one interest: Empowering Hoosiers to give back to their communities. If the government puts up roadblocks, then they should be repealed," Boneham said.

"Hoosiers have consistently voted in professional politicians and look at the results. Hoosiers should have a different choice in 2012," he said in the news release.

Boneham, who's known for wearing tie-dyed shirts, won $1 million when he was voted fan favorite in 2004's "Survivor: All-Stars." He donated a portion of his winnings to his Indianapolis-based charity, Rupert's Kids, which provides mentoring and job-training to at-risk youths.

Boneham formed an exploratory committee in August for a possible gubernatorial bid and said he wanted to gauge public support to see if people are ready to elect him.

Among the candidates who are seeking to replace Daniels, Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Pence and former Democratic Indiana House Speaker John Gregg are the early favorites.

Sam Goldstein, the state chair of the Libertarian Party of Indiana, said he's "very excited" about Boneham's announcement.

"His nomination would be a great asset to the party and I look forward to working with him and his campaign team should he win the nomination at our convention next spring," Goldstein said in a statement.

The party, which will hold its convention April 14, said Boneham has been a supporter and a member of the Libertarian Party for nearly a year.

Hispanic voters: Stick with Obama or go with GOP? (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? A year before the 2012 presidential election, Hispanic voters are facing a choice. They can continue to support President Barack Obama despite being hurt disproportionately by the economic downturn or turn to Republicans at a time when many GOP presidential hopefuls have taken a hard line on immigration.

Obama kicks off a three-day trip to Western states trip with a stop Monday in Las Vegas, where he wants to rally support for his jobs agenda in Congress. Nevada has the nation's highest unemployment rate, 13.4 percent.

The trip comes as Republican candidates have taken a more strident tone on immigration.

Businessman Herman Cain recently suggested electrifying a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico to kill illegal immigrants; he later called the remark a joke and apologized. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann has raised the issue of "anchor babies," or U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants; it's a term that some people find offensive.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been criticized by opponents for signing a law allowing some illegal immigrants to get in-state college tuition. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said most of the jobs created under Perry's watch went to illegal immigrants. Perry lashed into Romney during last week's GOP debate in Las Vegas for hiring a lawn care company that employed illegal immigrants.

Obama won 67 percent of Hispanic voters in 2008 but many of those voters have become disillusioned during the past three years. Unemployment among Hispanics tops 11 percent and many Latinos are losing their homes. Others criticize the number of deportations under Obama's presidency and the lack of progress on a comprehensive immigration plan.

"I am willing to support him, but I would like him to keep his word on all the promises he made," said Marcos Mata, 17, a Las Vegas high school senior who will vote for the first time next year. "Not just on immigration. But I don't know if I see any improvement. The jobs act, it's a good idea but he should have been doing that a long time ago."

Recent Gallup polling showed Obama with a 49 percent job approval rating among Hispanics, compared with about 60 percent in the beginning of 2011. Hispanic voters could prove pivotal next year, especially in fast-growing and contested states such as Florida, New Mexico, Nevada and Colorado.

Obama has said his jobs agenda would help Hispanics in the construction industry and provide tax breaks for small businesses. On immigration, he has targeted violent criminals for deportation and urged Congress to create a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.

Obama also has sought support for legislation that would provide a route to legal status for college students and members of the military brought to the country as children.

Republicans sense an opening and have courted Hispanic voters through Spanish-language radio and television ads, criticizing Obama's handling of the economy.

Crossroads GPS, a Republican political organization tied to strategist Karl Rove, ran a Spanish-language ad in five states last summer called "Despertarse," or "Wake up," depicting a young mother pacing her home early in the morning, worried about the economy and her children.

President George W. Bush was supported by 44 percent of Hispanic voters in 2004 but that level slipped for the 2008 GOP nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain. Party officials promote the success of prominent Hispanic Republicans, including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, but some worry that a harsh tone on immigration could undermine their efforts.

"The fundamental question will be whether the economic concerns of the Latino community are so severe that they are less critical of anti-immigrant positioning by the Republican party," said Adam Mendelsohn, a Republican strategist and former adviser to ex-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California.

Mendelsohn warned that Romney could damage his general election prospects if he makes immigration a focal point during the primary. "If the conventional wisdom is that Romney won the nomination because he beat up Perry on immigration, that's a narrative that will alienate Latinos."

Voters like Jose Hernandez, a Republican, are watching closely. Hernandez said his Las Vegas real estate business has faltered with the housing market. Most of his neighbors and clients are more concerned about the economy than immigration but he has found the tone of the GOP debate offensive, including comments about illegal immigrants stealing jobs.

"That's just ignorance," Hernandez said. "The Republicans need to talk about making it easier for people to come here."

Democrats say the immigration rhetoric in the GOP debates could have a similar impact that tough anti-immigration laws had in California during the 1990s under Republican Gov. Pete Wilson. Democratic presidential nominees have not lost California since 1988.

Obama's campaign is aggressively courting Latino voters.

In Fort Collins, Colo., on Saturday, about a dozen volunteers walked door to door to register voters and hand out pamphlets. "If we turn out 15,000 to 20,000 votes, that's going to make a big difference," said Joe Perez, 67, of Greeley, Colo.

Turnout will be key. Many Hispanic Democrats say the Republican debate on immigration has turned off Latino voters but worry that a weak economy could make it more difficult to encourage Hispanics to support Obama.

"Building the excitement and the enthusiasm to go to the polls, that's something we're going to have to figure out how to do," said Maria Elena Durazo, secretary-treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. "They just feel down. The economy is terrible so our challenge is still going to be getting them to the polls. I think we can do it."

Rihanna's Relationship History: In Her Own Words

Following 'We Found Love' video premiere, MTV News looks back at what Rihanna's said about her abusive relationship with Chris Brown.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: Rick Diamond/ WireImage

Many fans who watched Rihanna's "We Found Love" video were quick to tie the clip to the pop star's own experiences, describing the video as an "intense" visual experience.

The video, directed by Melina Matsoukas ("Hard," "S&M," "Rude Boy," "Rockstar 101"), tells the story of two young people driven not only by their dangerous passion for one another, but an equally dangerous passion for drugs. While their experiments with drugs certainly plays a big part in the story, their abusive relationship also helps weave the tale of the couple, played by Rihanna and British model/boxer Dudley O'Shaughnessy.

Rihanna has always been open about her own struggles in an abusive relationship, notably her relationship with Chris Brown, which culminated in a 2009 assault. In the two-plus years since the headline-making experience, Rihanna has moved the narrative toward her musical endeavors, which includes her forthcoming album, Talk That Talk, but the video also reminds fans of the singer's past, one she's never shied away from discussing.

When Rihanna sat down with MTV News in late 2009, she said she hoped young women would learn from her. "One of the big things for me, I always want to help young women and give them insight on different life experiences," she explained. "One of those things is going through an abusive relationship like I did. But that's one thing for me. So I don't want to be the big domestic-violence spokesperson, because that doesn't define who I am. But if I can help young women in any way, and that being one of the things they need help with, then I'll do that."

During the interview, Rihanna said she thought both she and Brown could grow as a result of the assault. "I know that he's going to take away something positive out of this entire experience," she said. "It was a life-changing experience for both of us. The best way that we can both win is if we come out learning from it and sharing with others, so they don't have to go through it like we did."

Rihanna's personal story had already been pegged to that experience when she was approached to record with Eminem on "Love the Way You Lie" in 2010 and the sequel for her album, Loud, "Love the Way You Lie (Part II)."

"I fell in love with it," she explained about making "Part II," noting she was originally unsure whether she could top the original. "We recorded it, then we did another version to the stripped-down version with drums, then we did another version with drums and Eminem. And then that was the one that just felt really good."

In the end, Rihanna said it was worth it because the song helped young women struggling with the same issues. "They got really emotional, and you automatically connect, because now you both have in common [something] that you wouldn't have been able to know if you didn't have this song to bridge that," she said. "This song, it gave a voice to victims. But what I really enjoy about this song is not only how cleverly written it is ... but the fact that [Eminem] confronts himself on this record is the biggest thing for me."

As she approaches the release of her new album, it seems Rihanna wants to leave all the talk about Brown in the past. "It was too much anger.

I'm really excited to see the breakthrough he's had in his career," she explained to Esquire. "It's incredible to see how he pulled out the way he did, even when the world seemed like it was against him. I really like the music he's putting out. I'm a fan of his stuff; I've always been a fan. I would never wish anything horrible for him. Never. I never have."

US manufacturers are making one thing - profits

U.S. Census Bureau

By Allison Linn

The last few years have been tough on many?Americans who work in the manufacturing industry, but they haven't been nearly?as tough on the manufacturers? profits.

U.S. manufacturers have seen a steady uptick in profits since bottoming out in late 2008, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

After-tax profits for U.S. manufacturers totaled $159.7 billion in the second quarter, according to the Census Bureau. That?s nearly triple what they were in the second quarter of 2009, when corporations were just starting to emerge from the deep economic blows of 2008. The data is seasonally adjusted.??

The Census data also include any money the manufacturers made or lost by producing or selling goods in other countries.

Joel Naroff, economist with Naroff Economic Advisors, said that?s one reason profits have been on the rise over the past couple of years.

?Globalization is, to no small extent, driving a fair amount of these profits,? Naroff said.

Another big help: The weak U.S. dollar.

?The weak dollar has begun to actually do what it?s supposed to do and that?s to generate more exports,? Naroff said.

Still, even as manufacturers have seen their bottom lines improve, job gains have been scarce.

About 11.7 million people are currently employed in U.S. manufacturing, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data. That?s about two million fewer than when the recession began in December of 2007, although it is an improvement over a low of around 11.5 million in late 2009.

Some companies have automated more functions so they can boost productivity without adding a lot of workers, while others have simply found a way to squeeze more work out of their existing workforce.

The big question now is whether such gains can last. Naroff said compensation costs may have increased since the second quarter, and manufacturers may also be paying more for the commodities they use to make their products. Those factors could mean that profits start to slow, he said.

XML encryption is insecure: Large companies affected

Standards are supposed to guarantee security, especially in the WWW. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is the main force behind standards like HTML, XML, and XML Encryption. But implementing a W3C standard does not mean that a system is secure. Researchers from the chair of network and data security have found a serious attack against XML Encryption. "Everything is insecure", is the uncomfortable message from Bochum.

Standard for large integration projects

XML stands for "eXtensible Markup Language", and is the industry standard for platform-independent data exchange. Companies like IBM, Microsoft and Redhat Linux use XML standards for integrating Webservice projects for large customers. XML Encryption was designed to protect the confidentiality of the exchanged data. Reason enough to have a closer look at its security.

Weak chaining of ciphertext blocks

Juraj Somorovsky and Tibor Jager exploited a weakness in the CBC mode for the chaining of different ciphertext blocks. "We were able to decrypt data by sending modified ciphertexts to the server, by gathering information from the received error messages." The attack was tested against a popular open source implementation of XML Encrytion, and against the implementations of companies that responded to the responsible disclosure in all cases the result was the same: the attack works, XML Encryption is not secure. Details of the attack are presented at this year's ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security.

No simple solution available

There is no simple patch for this problem", states Somorovsky. "We therefore propose to change the standard as soon as possible." The researchers informed all possibly affected companies through the mailing list of W3C, following a clear responsible disclosure process. With some companies there were intensive discussions on workarounds.

A 40 Percent Chance of Economic Doom

MZ: What that means is we need policymakers to do more. They can?t just pass parts of this and stop. They do need to be thinking about what policies will help the economy [in the] longer-run, and the president?s doing that, as are the Republican proposals. In fact, most if not all of the Republican proposals are good ones, but they?re focused on the longer-run. They?re not focused on ?how do I avoid a recession in the next few months?? So I think we need to pursue other policies. That [includes] everything [from] ensuring that our long-term fiscal situation is in order, to tax reform, to the other proposals about regulatory reform and trade policy. It?s very important for policymakers to pass this near-term help for the economy and make sure we don?t go back into a recession. If we do, then all other problems will become much more difficult. But [it?s] also [important] to focus on these longer-term policy issues so we can help the economy in 2013, 2014, or 2015.

St. Pauls head: London demo must not stop visitors (AP)

LONDON ? The head of St. Paul's Cathedral made a diplomatically worded plea Monday to anti-capitalist protesters camped outside, saying their presence should not deter tourists wanting to visit the historic building.

Around 500 demonstrators gathered outside the cathedral over the weekend as part of the global Occupy Wall Street protests. Many pitched tents around the cathedral, and have set up a makeshift kitchen, toilets and an information center.

St. Paul's is a London landmark nestled next to the city's financial district. Designed by 17th-century architect Christopher Wren, its domed roof still dominates the London skyline. Princess Diana married there in 1981, her long wedding train tumbling over the steps where the protesters have set up their base.

Dean Graeme Paul Knowles of St. Paul's said prayer services had continued as normal over the weekend, but the "last few days have not been without various challenges." In his statement, he added that the protesters have been careful to make sure they do not block people trying to enter the cathedral but said cathedral staff, police and community leaders are "monitoring the situation carefully."

Protesters had planned to demonstrate outside the nearby London Stock Exchange, but they were turned back and returned to the foot of the cathedral.

Police tried to move protesters away from St. Paul's on Sunday but senior priest Giles Fraser said the demonstrators were welcome to stay and asked police officers to move instead.

One protester, Ian Chamberlin said the camp was well organized and peaceful.

"We have shared rules about things like not drinking, not taking drugs. We want to make sure the camp is a safe place to be," he said. "There's something symbolic about staying here, near the stock exchange, to pass on our message that the banking system isn't serving the needs of ordinary people, it is not a democratic force."

Chamberlin, 27, said he is willing to remain at the camp as long as he is allowed to.

Police said eight people were arrested over the weekend, mainly for public disorder offenses, but the protests had been mainly peaceful.

Hundreds of thousands demonstrated against corporate greed in cities across Europe on Saturday, along with much smaller protests in cities across the U.S.

Rioters in Rome hijacked a peaceful protest, smashing bank and store windows, tearing up sidewalks and torching vehicles. The mayor of Rome says they caused at least euro1 million ($1.4 million) in damage.

Legendary 'Madchester' band to reunite in UK (AP)

LONDON ? The Stone Roses, one of the best-loved and most influential bands to emerge from Britain's "Madchester" scene, announced Tuesday that they are reuniting and working on new material.

The band members, who split in 1996 after releasing two albums, said they will play two shows in their hometown of Manchester on June 29 and 30, followed by an international tour.

"Our plan is to take on the world," said singer Ian Brown as the band announced its reunion at a London news conference.

"It's not a trip down memory lane," he added. "We are doing new songs."

Formed by Brown and guitarist John Squire, the band's self-titled 1989 debut album was a huge British hit. But fans waited five years for the followup, "Second Coming," and the group soon split up amid internal wrangling and legal disputes.

The band members insisted for years that they would not get back together, but Squire said he and Brown had met recently at the funeral of bass player Gary "Mani" Mounfield's mother and "in some ways it felt like 15 years ago was yesterday."

The band's blend of rock, pop, psychedelia and dance influences made it one of the biggest acts to emerge from the "Madchester" scene in the late '80s and early '90s in and around the northwest England city of Manchester.

Other bands grouped under the label include Happy Mondays and The Charlatans.

France says rating safe despite Moody's warning, weak (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? France insisted on Tuesday its triple-A credit rating was safe despite a warning shot from ratings agency Moody's but it acknowledged growth would probably miss its target and more belt tightening may be needed ahead of elections next year.

Moody's raised the prospect of one of the pillars of the euro zone losing its coveted triple-A status, saying on Monday it could place France on negative outlook in the next three months if the costs for helping to bail out banks and other euro zone members overstretched its budget.

Moody's also cited a downside risk to France's economic growth outlook, which could complicate efforts to cut a budget deficit forecast for 5.7 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) this year -- roughly the same level as bailed out Portugal.

Economic growth in France, the euro zone's second-largest economy, ground to a halt in the second quarter. While most economists expect a pick-up later this year, they see weak growth continuing in the medium-term as unemployment remains mired at around 9 percent, undermining domestic consumption.

Finance Minister Francois Baroin acknowledged the government's 2012 growth target of 1.75 percent was probably too high and would have to be adjusted, without saying by how much or when.

"It is probably too high compared to the development of the economic situation ... We will adapt it, that much is clear," he told France 2 television.

He said, however, that France's triple-A -- which is essential to the viability of the euro zone's 440 billion EFSF rescue fund which is largely underwritten by Germany and France -- was safe because the government stood ready to take additional budgetary steps to safeguard it.

"It is not in danger because ... we will even be ahead of schedule in passing deficit reduction measures," he said.

With a tough re-election battle looming in April, President Nicolas Sarkozy has been wary of politically unpopular cuts to public spending, but announced a 12 billion euro package of deficit reduction measures just two months ago, mostly consisting of eliminating tax breaks.

Prime Minister Francois Fillon said late on Monday that next year's budget would work even if growth fell to 1.5 percent. He said a European leaders' summit this weekend would be decisive in re-establishing confidence in the euro zone.

"If we are capable in the next two weeks to put together measures strong enough to stop the speculation ... then there will be growth in 2012 and we will reach the 1.5 percent," he told France 2. "If we fail, then it is serious because the whole world will be at risk of a recession and we will have to take new measures."

GOVT HAS THREE MONTHS TO ACT

Michel Martinez, an economist at Societe Generale in Paris, said that France still has the ability to correct any growth shortfall with deficit-cutting steps, but said the government needed to take action before year-end.

"The adjustment needs to be made in the next three months or so, before the presidential election campaign gets into full swing," he said. "If that does not happen, it will be too late and the 2012 deficit targets will not be respected."

A Reuters poll last week predicted that French growth would slow to 1.0 percent next year -- a scenario that would force the government to find billions of euros.

With Sarkozy's main opponent for next year's election, Socialist candidate Francois Hollande, also pledging to meet France's EU commitment to reduce its deficit to 3 percent of GDP by 2013, Moody's noted that political risk was not a major factor for France.

The government, however, faces the prospect of guaranteeing up to 33 billion euros of Franco-Belgian lender Dexia SA's toxic debt. French government officials say there will be no major impact on the public deficit.

With European Union leaders considering steps to recapitalise the region's banks to insulate them from the risk posed by the debt crisis, France has insisted that other French banks like BNP Paribas and SocGen would be expected to find their own capital via retained earnings and dividend cuts.

But analysts noted it was weak growth, not the banking sector, which posed the main threat to France's ratings.

"The banks' recapitalisation is just a one-shot operation. This would impact the debt, but the real problem is the trajectory of public finances and therefore growth," said Jean-Louis Mourier of brokerage Aurel Leven BCG.

"The problem with French public finances is not so much the level of the debt, which is comparable to Germany's: the problem is that economic growth is the road toward restoring public finances, and the growth outlook for France is weak for the coming years," he said.
