Huge crowd in St Peter's Square for pope's last audience

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A huge crowd gathered in St Peter's Square on Wednesday to bid goodbye to Pope Benedict the day before he becomes the first pontiff in some six centuries to step down.

The pope was to hold his last general audience, which usually takes place in an indoor auditorium but was moved outside into the sprawling square to accommodate more people.

"He did what he had to do in his conscience before God," said Sister Carmela, from a city north of Rome, who came to the capital with her fellow nuns and members of her parish.

Many in the crowd, which streamed into the square across the Tiber River and along nearby streets, held up banners thanking the pope and wishing him well. They came from all over Italy and abroad.

"This is a day in which we are called to trust in the Lord, a day of hope," said Sister Carmela. "There is no room for sadness here today. We have to pray, there are many problems in the Church but we have to trust in the Lord."

Some 50,000 people asked for the free tickets but the crowd was larger and many people had to stand at the back. No immediate crowd estimate was available.

"He was very humble to do this," said Carla Mantoni, 65, from a parish in Rome.

"I understand why he did this. It was clear from the start that he was more at home in a library. A very good man but he realized in his heart that this was the right thing to do for himself and the Church and now he will pray, he will pray for all of us," she said.

Despite the praise and sympathy for the pope from faithful in the square, many catholics were stunned by his decision and worry about the effect it will have on the future of a troubled Church.

The Vatican has said that Benedict, who will move to the papal summer residence south of Rome on Thursday night when the papacy becomes vacant, will assume the title of "pope emeritus" and be addressed as "your holiness".

SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN

He will lay aside the red "shoes of the fisherman" that have been part of his papal attire and wear brown loafers given to him by shoemakers during a trip to Leon, Mexico last year. He will wear a "simple white cassock", Lombardi said.

His lead seal and his ring of office, known as the "ring of the fisherman", will be destroyed according to Church rules, just as if he had died.

The Vatican said on Tuesday that the pope was sifting through documents to see which will remain in the Vatican and go into the archives of his papacy and which "are of a personal nature and he will take to his new residence".

Among the documents left for the next pope will be a confidential report by three cardinals into the "Vatileaks" affair last year when Benedict's former butler revealed private papers showing corruption and in-fighting inside the Vatican.

The new pope will inherit a Church marked by Vatileaks and by child abuse scandals involving priests in Europe and the United States, both of which may have weighed on Benedict's decision that he was too old and weak to continue.

On Thursday, he will greet cardinals in Rome, many of whom have come to take part in the conclave to elect his successor.

That afternoon at 5 p.m. (1600 GMT) he will fly by helicopter to the papal summer retreat at Castel Gandolfo, a 15-minute journey south of Rome.

There he will make an appearance from the window of the papal villa to greet residents and well-wishers expected to gather in the small square.

That will be Pope Benedict's last public appearance.

At 8 p.m. the Swiss Guards who stand as sentries at the residence will march off in a sign that the papacy is vacant.

Benedict will move into a convent in the Vatican in April, after it has been restored.

On Friday, cardinals in Rome will begin meetings known as "general congregations" to prepare for the secret conclave that will elect a new pope.

This week Benedict changed Church rules so that cardinals could begin the conclave earlier than the 15 days after the papacy becomes vacant prescribed by the previous law.

The change means that the cardinals, in their pre-conclave meetings, can themselves decide when to start.

The Vatican appears to be aiming to have a new pope elected by mid-March and installed before Palm Sunday on March 24 so he can preside at Holy Week services leading to Easter.

Cardinals have begun informal consultations by phone and email in the past two weeks since Benedict said he was quitting.

coverlovetheftLove and Theft may be celebrating the release of their second studio album, but to the ACM-nominated country duo, the self-titled release might as well be their first.

And in a way, it is. Love and Theft is Stephen Barker Liles and Eric Gunderson?s first album since joining RCA Nashville, the home to many of their musical inspirations. ?We feel like people will be hearing us for the first time,? says Eric.

Stephen agrees and credits the label?s storied history with helping to reenergize the band. ?The history of RCA Records is incredible. Just knowing that we are on the same label as some of our biggest influences, like Elvis Presley, is an awesome feeling.?

That excitement is palpable throughout the 11 songs that comprise the album, a fluid mix of country melodies and sing-along choruses, all driven by Eric?s earthy voice and Stephen?s high-altitude tenor. The guys share lead vocals, harmonize like a church choir and bolster their songs with their own guitar playing. ?We sound like brothers when we sing,? says Eric. ?Stephen and I have always been on the same page as far as the vision for the band, and we feel like we have made the record we?ve always wanted to make.?

Produced by Josh Leo (Alabama, Nitty Gritty Dirty Band), Love and Theft is a nod to the duo?s varied influences. The rollicking first single ?Angel Eyes??which scored the twosome their first CMT Music Awards nomination for Duo Video of the Year?brings to mind Elvis Presley?s ?(You?re the) Devil in Disguise.? The pair is equally enthusiastic about ?Runnin? Out of Air,? a tune they describe as ?Maroon 5 meets the Eagles.?

Stephen and Eric?s experiences growing up in the Bible Belt help inform the new album, especially on the wild-child single ?Angel Eyes,? which Eric co-wrote with Eric Paslay and Jeff Coplan. ?Preacher?s kids seem to have the most rebellious side and get in trouble more,? Eric admits with a laugh. ?That was kind of the inspiration for that. We wrote it from a personal place.?

With a renewed emphasis on organic sounds, their second album has brought Love and Theft closer to what it set out to be: a band that writes, records and performs honest, soulful country music.

?This record represents the way we sound live,? says Stephen, before?like the musical brothers they are?Eric completes the thought. ?It shows a more mature, evolved Love and Theft but the core is still the same,? he says. ?Our sound will always be driven by harmonies.?

Resurrection of 3-billion-year-old antibiotic-resistance proteins

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Scientists are reporting "laboratory resurrections" of several 2-3-billion-year-old proteins that are ancient ancestors of the enzymes that enable today's antibiotic-resistant bacteria to shrug off huge doses of penicillins, cephalosporins and other modern drugs. The achievement, reported in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, opens the door to a scientific "replay" of the evolution of antibiotic resistance with an eye to finding new ways to cope with the problem.

Jose M. Sanchez-Ruiz, Eric A. Gaucher, Valeria A. Risso and colleagues explain that antibiotic resistance existed long before Alexander Fleming discovered the first antibiotic in 1928. Genes that contain instructions for making the proteins responsible for antibiotic resistance have been found in 30,000-year-old permafrost sediment and other ancient sites. Their research focused on the so-called beta-lactamases, enzymes responsible for resistance to the family of antibiotics that includes penicillin, which scientists believe originated billions of years ago.

They describe using laboratory and statistical techniques to reconstruct the sequences of beta-lactamase proteins dating to Precambrian times, 2-3 billion years ago. The team also synthesized the inferred ancestral enzymes and conducted studies on their stability, structure and function. "The availability of laboratory resurrections of Precambrian beta-lactamases opens up new possibilities in the study of the emergence of antibiotic resistance," the report states. "For instance, it should now be possible to perform laboratory replays of the molecular tape of lactamase evolution and use such replays to probe the molecular determinants of the efficiency of lactamases to adapt to different types of antibiotics." The authors also note that the extreme stability and catalytic features displayed by the 2-3-billion-year-old lactamases suggest that resurrected Precambrian proteins have utility for the biotechnology industry.

The authors and co-authors acknowledge financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, NASA Astrobiology Institute, FEDER Funds and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Italy faces post-vote stalemate, spooking investors

ROME (Reuters) - The Italian stock market fell and state borrowing costs rose on Tuesday as investors took fright at political deadlock after a stunning election that saw a protest party lead the poll and no group had a clear majority in parliament.

"The winner is: Ingovernability" ran the headline in Rome newspaper Il Messaggero, reflecting the stalemate the country would have to confront in the next few weeks as sworn enemies would be forced to work together to form a government.

In a sign of where that might lead, former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi indicated his center-right might be open to a grand coalition with the center-left bloc of Pier Luigi Bersani, which will have a majority in the lower house thanks to a premium of seats given to the largest bloc in the chamber.

Results in the upper house, the Senate, where seats are awarded on a region-by-region basis, indicated the center-left would end up with about 119 seats, compared with 117 for the center-right. But 158 are needed for a majority to govern.

Any coalition government that may be formed must have a working majority in both houses in order to pass legislation.

World financial markets reacted nervously to the prospect of a stalemate in the euro zone's third-largest economy with memories still fresh of the crisis that took the 17-member currency bloc to the brink of collapse in 2011.

The Milan bourse was down more than four percent at its opening and the spread between yields on 10-year Italian and German government bonds widened to 338.7 basis points, the highest since December 10. An ally of conservative German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Italy to stick with reforms pursued by the outgoing technocratic emergency government of Mario Monti.

However, the poor showing by Prime Minister Monti's centrist bloc reflected a weariness with austerity that was exploited by both Berlusconi and comic Beppe Grillo; his anti-establishment 5-Star Movement won more votes than any other single party, taking 25 percent nationally. Bersani's allies helped his center-left bloc win the lower house by just 125,000 votes.

Berlusconi, a media magnate whose campaigning all but eroded Bersani's once commanding lead, said he was not worried about market reaction and played down the significance of the spread.

In a telephone call to a morning television show, he said: "Italy must be governed." He ruled out a deal with Monti but said he "must reflect" on a possible deal with the center left: "Every (political side) must be prepared to make sacrifices."

The euro skidded to an almost seven-week low against the dollar in Asia on fears about the euro zone's debt crisis. It fell as far as $1.3042, its lowest since January 10.

Another indication of investors' reaction to the results will come later on Tuesday when the Treasury auctions 8.75 billion euros in 6-month bonds.

Bersani claimed victory in the lower house and said it was obvious that Italy was in "a very delicate situation".

Grillo, however, showed no immediate willingness to negotiate. Commentators said all his adversaries underestimated the appeal of a grassroots movement that called itself a "non-party", particularly its allure among young Italians who find themselves without jobs and the prospect of a decent future.

"NON-PARTY" SURGES TO THE TOP

The 5-star Movement's score of 25.5 percent in the lower house was just ahead of the 25.4 percent for Bersani's Democratic Party, which ran in a coalition with the leftist SEL party, and it won almost 8.7 million votes overall - more than any other single party.

"The 'non-party' has become the largest party in the country," said Massimo Giannini, commentator for the Rome newspaper La Repubblica about Grillo, who mixes fierce attacks on corruption with policies ranging from clean energy to free Internet.

Grillo's surge in the final weeks of the campaign threw the race open, with hundreds of thousands turning up at his rallies to hear him lay into targets ranging from corrupt politicians and bankers to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

In just three years, his 5-Star Movement, heavily backed by a frustrated generation of young Italians increasingly shut out from permanent full-time jobs, has grown from a marginal group to one of the most talked about political forces in Europe.

RECESSION

"It's a classic result. Typically Italian," said Roberta Federica, a 36-year-old office worker in Rome. "It means the country is not united. It is an expression of a country that does not work. I knew this would happen."

Italy's borrowing costs have come down in recent months, helped by the promise of European Central Bank support but the election result confirmed fears of many European countries that it would not produce a government strong enough to implement effective reforms.

A long recession and growing disillusionment with mainstream parties fed a bitter public mood that saw more than half of Italian voters back parties that rejected the austerity policies pursued by Monti with the backing of Italy's European partners.

Monti suffered a major setback. His centrist grouping won only 10.6 percent and two of his key centrist allies, Pier Ferdinando Casini and lower house speaker Gianfranco Fini, both of parliamentarians for decades, were booted out.

"It's not that surprising if you consider how much people were let down by politics in its traditional forms," Monti said.

Berlusconi's campaign, mixing sweeping tax cut pledges with relentless attacks on Monti and Merkel, echoed many of the themes pushed by Grillo and underlined the increasingly angry mood of the Italian electorate.

Stefano Zamagni, an economics professor at Bologna University said the result showed that a significant share of Italians "are fed up with following the austerity line of Germany and its northern allies".

"These people voted to stick one up to Merkel and austerity," he said.

Even if the next government turns away from the tax hikes and spending cuts brought in by Monti, it will struggle to revive an economy that has scarcely grown in two decades.

Monti was widely credited with tightening Italy's public finances and restoring its international credibility after the scandal-plagued Berlusconi, whom he replaced as the 2011 financial crisis threatened to spin out of control.

But he struggled to pass the kind of structural reforms needed to improve competitiveness and lay the foundations for a return to economic growth, and a weak center-left government may not find it any easier.

Video: Girl who burned hair off gets lesson in curling

>>> back now at 8:15 with a florida teen's instructional video that went very, very wrong.

>> hi, guys, it's tori . i'm basically going to curl my hair. i think this makes the curls look bigger when you wrap it up. oh, my god. you're kidding me. my hair just burnt off.

>> that expression, priceless. this was posted on youtube just over a week ago. already it has more than 14 million hits and, tori locklear is the middle schooler in that video. she's with us, along with celebrity hairstylist ted gibb gibson. good morning to you.

>> good morning.

>> tori , that had disaster written all over it. you did that in october. the section here is still growing back, wow!

>> yeah.

>> that had to be painful for you when you saw that piece of hair on the curling iron .

>> it was.

>> tell me what you thought when you saw that, your reaction.

>> when i saw that, i was in shock. it didn't seem real at first. then i realized, it actually came off.

>> did you smell any burning or get any sense that something was going on?

>> no.

>> you posted that in october, as i mentioned. already 14 million hits. you posted it, rather, last week. this happened in october. why did you wait so long to post it?

>> all right. i had bad grades at the time. i got my laptop taken away. when i got it back, i was going through my pictures and videos and i saw that and was laughing hysterically. i posted it online and also on facebook. and i wasn't supposed to have one.

>> facebook?

>> yeah. it went around and i got grounded.

>> you're grounded now but you're here in new york. ted gibson is helping you out this morning. this is something you've seen professionally.

>> absolutely.

>> what happened?

>> the girls don't necessarily know that the hair has to be 100% dry. use a hairspray in it, just a light control hairspray, spray it on then use an iron. what's great about irons, sometimes they have a dial on them. make sure that you always, always check the dial.

>> did you check the dial?

>> if it's too hot --

>> there wasn't.

>> there wasn't a dial? just hot and on.

>> she confessed to me that she had a leave-in conditioner. it's going to be too heavy, it's going to be wet. it's not going to be dry. the hair has to be 100% dry before you put any flat iron or curling iron in the hair always.

>> let's see how to do it the right way.

>> you want to take a one-inch section.

>> in her instructional video she said to hold it there for 20 seco seconds or longer.

>> way too long! that is way too long. five to seven seconds is enough. all you want to do is give it some texture, give it some wave. take the iron. you wrap the hair around the iron. you leave the ends out for three to five seconds. that's all you need and all you'll get is a little bit of wave, little bit of texture. what makes it modern is that the ends are a little straighter than they are a full curl on the end.

>> people who use these appliances every day, is that generally not advisable?

>> that is not advisable. you should take a break from the he heat. it's like heat therapy . you want to take a break from the heat and not necessarily always use an iron on it every single day.

>> tori , is there some good that's come out of all of this? you were on "ellen" yesterday, on the "today" show today. so what have you learned about all of this?

>> it's good because i got to experience all this.

>> exactly. and you got to hang out here with kathie lee , by the way. sorry for busting in on your turf, lady.

>> no problem.

>> she's not getting her attention here. don't worry. we'll give it to her. tori , thank you so much. tori locklear.

Uber recruiting San Franciscan drivers, no (official taxi) license needed

Taxi-hailing apps like Uber and its competitors have been hitting stop sign after speed bump in their journey to actually, you know, being able to operate. Uber even had to shut down a beta in the Big Apple before the authorities gave such services the green light (with various caveats), and earlier this month, a similar win was scored in California when officials lifted local restrictions. As a result of the Golden State's leniency, Uber has started its UBERx program in San Francisco to recruit drivers who don't possess a specific taxi or limo license. That means everyone and your neighbor Bob can potentially start exchanging rides for cash, and are being promised decent compensation, completely flexible working hours, and access to a large number of clients. Luckily for fare-payers, those that wish to repurpose their whip will have to pass several tests before ferrying passengers, including a "city knowledge exam," so hopefully you won't end up on Alcatraz when you just asked Bob for a lift to Chinatown.

Search called off for missing sailboat

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) ? The Coast Guard on Tuesday called off the search for a boat that reportedly sank in rough seas far off the Central California coast with two adults and two children on board, saying the family's frantic distress calls could have been a hoax.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Mike Lutz said crews found no debris and no physical signs of distress after searching for nearly 48 hours.

Crews have been looking for the family by sea and air since receiving their first distress call Sunday afternoon.

The boaters said their 29-foot sailboat, which might have been called "Charmblow," was taking on water and their electronics were failing.

The boat had no working GPS system, but investigators used its radio signal and radar to determine the call came from an area about 60 miles west of Monterey, where strong winds, cold water and big swells made for perilous conditions. Forecasters had issued a weekend advisory warning boaters of high swells in the area.

An hour later, the family members reported they had to abandon the boat and were trying to make a life raft out of a cooler and life-preserver ring. The Coast Guard then lost radio contact.

Investigators determined from the broken distress calls that the family included a husband and wife, their 4-year-old son and his cousin, Coast Guard Lt. Heather Lampert said. The agency received no reports about a family missing at sea.

On Monday, the Coast Guard released one of the recorded calls in hopes that it would lead to new information from the public that could help in the search.

In the crackling recording, a man's voice is heard saying, "Coast Guard, Coast Guard, we are abandoning ship. This is the (Charmblow), we are abandoning ship."

Lutz said earlier Tuesday there was nothing on the distress call such as laughter that would spark suspicion, and he did not think it was particularly unusual that the man on the call sounded calm.

"You never really know how someone is going to handle it," Lutz said. "Some people are a lot calmer than others."

Coast Guard Executive Officer Noah Hudson in Monterey said it's always difficult to call off a search.

"It's tough for me thinking that we had four people out on the water who were in need of rescue and to think there might have been loss of life in this case is tragic."

But if it was a hoax, "it's unfortunate that we were forced to use so many resources for so much time," Hudson said. He did not know how much money had been spent on the search efforts.

Dear Vivek: Think Big On Immigration | TechCrunch

Editor?s note:?Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez?represents the Fourth District of Illinois in the U.S. Congress and is the Chairman of the Immigration Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Follow him on Twitter?@LuisGutierrez.

I was sorry to read in your most recent post that you were ?disappointed? with my response to your article on immigration and Silicon Valley, but I am not surprised. You and I both support a top-to-bottom overhaul of our immigration system, but I think we fundamentally disagree on how to get there, including how to get us to a world-class, functioning immigration and visa system that helps, rather than hurts, the American economy and the high-tech industry.

You argue for the ?lean? approach, with a standalone bill for high-tech visas, startup visas, and H1B temporary worker visas. Think small, you seem to argue. Let us accomplish the most, in your estimation, politically popular and achievable components of reform first, and build on that success to work towards something bigger later.

That may be a good model for launching a startup, but it is not a model that fits Congress. Congress is hardly a startup and is not a place to expect long-term, rational or coherent strategic planning towards an eventual good outcome or IPO payday.

No, I prefer a different business model when it comes to enacting legislation: When the marketplace is ready for the next big thing, then you should move. Move quickly, and move big. We in Congress are a lot more like frogs on a skillet than forward-looking visionaries. When the heat is turned up, we move, and when it isn?t, we don?t. Right now, the heat is on both parties to deliver immigration reform that satisfies several decades of dissatisfaction. That dissatisfaction comes from all corners of America ? employers, working people, voters, immigrants and non-immigrants alike. The most popular solution on the table is to fix our immigration system and fix it well and not to try to divide up the issue into discrete chunks.

The best way ? the fastest and surest way ? to get the immigration policy that America needs to compete internationally is to pass a comprehensive immigration reform package that resolves as many of our immigration issues as possible in one bill. This means creating or improving on avenues for legal immigration, getting people who have been waiting decades to come legally through the process, legalizing those already living here through a rigorous but sensible process, and layering in smart enforcement mechanisms that will give the new and improved system integrity.

I find it ironic that a Congressman and former cab driver from Chicago has to be the one to tell you folks with the fancy degrees in Silicon Valley to ?think big!? But think big, we must.

In my last article, I focused mainly on the politics and why now is the right time to think big. The nativist wing of the Republican Party opposed to legal immigration no longer has as strong a grip, so many of my colleagues across the aisle are interested in working with Democrats to pass an immigration reform bill.? That is a monumental sea change that could allow us to create legal avenues for immigration that have been clogged, backlogged and unadjusted for too long.

But there is a more important reason to support comprehensive immigration reform right now, because we should reject the notion that one type of immigrant is good for us and another is bad for us. That has never been the case in American history and it is not the case now. We should have an immigration system that matches the needs of our society and the needs of our economy but that is fundamentally egalitarian.

I support a special visa program for STEM graduates in science, technology, engineering and math ? and I have. I support it more if it is part of a broader reform to bring sense to our entire immigration system.? Similarly with startup and millionaire visas, they should be part of the mix, but alone, they are not more popular, more politically viable, nor more justifiable than a reform that addresses the great level of need at all levels of our economy.

If measures to address the needs of the high-tech sector could pass independently from a comprehensive immigration reform package, I don?t think they would build support for broader reforms. Congress would probably consider the immigration reform box checked and move on to other issues until the heat was turned up again, and there?s no telling how long that would take.

What then would you have me say to the young person who grew up in the United States but cannot become a citizen, a licensed driver, or a college graduate because they were brought here as a child from another country without a visa? Sorry? You have to wait for the high-tech community in California to get what they need before you can be legal and get on with your life.

That is not an acceptable answer to me. And it?s not an acceptable answer to the American people. Fully 70 percent of the American people support immigration reform with legalization and a path to citizenship in the most recent Washington Post poll and the public support has been consistently high.

What about their parents who, like most undocumented immigrants, probably have lived here a decade or more raising their kids and working hard? Their work is valuable, too, and they should be given a chance to live honestly and uprightly in their adopted country because the reality is, they are part of this country.

What do I say to garlic pickers in Gilroy who are doubly exploited, because they are women and because they are undocumented? Your work and sacrifice for your children is less important than the work of other mothers and fathers farther up highway 101, but when you become more politically viable, we will address the fact that you are working and living in a country that enjoys the taste of your product but not enough to protect you with our wage and labor laws.

Then there is the father in New Jersey who I met a couple of years ago. He is no longer with us, but I carry his plea with me wherever I go. He was a Puerto Rican Vietnam veteran who was dying of cancer who asked me if I could help him prevent his wife from being deported. His children, raised in the United States and citizens from birth, were in danger of losing their mother, an undocumented immigrant, and he asked me to help make sure his family was not exiled or ripped apart after he died.

I know the urgency with which you and others in Silicon Valley seek visas and avenues for fair competition in a global market place, and I need you to keep insisting that the Congress move with all deliberate speed. But I also hear the desperate call from families and neighborhoods dealing with ramped-up enforcement of an irrational immigration system that is failing us. The status quo is unsustainable in so many ways, so all of us who want to get something done and move beyond the gridlock must work together to keep Washington to task.

Vivek, join me and we can accomplish more this year than we have been able to accomplish in decades. But we will only succeed if we are working together and think big.

Titanic II blueprints unveiled, but don't call it 'unsinkable'

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Australian mining entrepreneur Clive Palmer on Tuesday unveiled blueprints for Titanic II, a modern replica of the doomed ocean liner, although he stopped short of calling the vessel unsinkable.

The ship will largely recreate the design and decor of the fabled original, with some modifications to keep it in line with current safety rules and shipbuilding practices, and the addition of some modern comforts such as air conditioning, Palmer said at a press conference in New York.

The three passenger classes, however, will be prevented from mingling, as in 1912, Palmer said.

"I'm not too superstitious," Palmer said when asked whether recreating a ship best known for sinking was tempting fate.

White Star Line, the operator of the original ship, had said the Titanic was designed to be unsinkable. Some 1,500 people died on Titanic's maiden voyage in 1912 from Southampton to New York after the ship collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic.

Palmer, who created the company Blue Star Line last year, declined to make a similar boast.

"Anything will sink if you put a hole in it," Palmer said. "I think it would be very cavalier to say it."

Unlike the original, Titanic II will have more than enough space in its lifeboats for every person on board and will have additional escape staircases. Markku Kanerva, sales director at Deltamarin, the Finnish company designing the ship, said it would be the "safest cruise ship in the world."

Palmer declined to answer questions about the project's cost. Although the Titanic was the world's largest ship in her time, she would be smaller than many of today's modern cruise ships.

"It's not about the money," Palmer said. "I've got enough money for it, I think that's all that matters."

Forbes estimated Palmer's net worth to be $795 million in 2012. He describes himself as a billionaire.

Titanic II will be built by Chinese state-owned CSC Jinling Shipyard, which is already building four ore carriers for Palmer's mining business, he said. The contract to build Titanic II has not yet been signed, Palmer said.

"Oh, probably next week, something like that," Palmer said, when asked when that would happen. "Most things I say I'll do I do."

He hoped construction would begin later this year, and that the maiden voyage, recreating the trans-Atlantic crossing of the original, would take place in 2016, he said.

"But if it takes longer, it takes longer," he said. "But we'll do it. We've got a big pile of money."

Jaime Katz, an analyst who tracks the cruise industry, said Titanic II may find it difficult to compete with established cruise lines, particularly the economies of scale of their larger fleets. She said the Titanic II could be marketed to wealthier passengers and could draw repeat business by varying its routes rather than focusing on trans-Atlantic crossings.

"People are going to be really cautious or superstitious regarding getting on a second version of the Titanic, or it could be a really compelling idea for history buffs who really want to live the story or the legend behind it," Katz said.

"There's an audience for all sorts of cruises," she said.

Titanic II will operate as a cruise ship, and passengers will find 1912-style clothing in their rooms should they wish to dress up and pretend they are living in an earlier era as they visit facsimiles of the original gilded first-class dining and smoking rooms, if they have the appropriate ticket.

Although the classes will be kept largely separate, Palmer said he was considering offering ticket packages that would allow passengers to experience all three classes during a typical six-day Atlantic crossing.

Prices for the tickets will be announced later.

Helen Benziger, a descendant of Titanic survivor Margaret Brown, better known as the Unsinkable Molly Brown, said at the press conference that the ship would be a chance to experience the sort of grace and civility she said was sometimes lacking in the modern world.

"I think it's a chance to go back in time," said Benziger, who has joined the project's advisory board.

Palmer said he plans to travel in third class on Titanic II's maiden voyage.

"I'll be looking forward to it as you bang the drum and play the fiddle, twirling around like Leonardo does," he said, meaning actor Leonardo DiCaprio, in one of the repeated references he made to the 1997 James Cameron film ?Titanic.'

Apple joins Facebook, others, in support of same-sex marriage

Apple is joining more than sixty companies, including Facebook and Intel, in urging the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down Proposition 8, a California law that prohibits same-sex marriage by defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman. According to Bloomberg, the group that Apple is joining argues that the California ban, along with those in effect in 41 other states, negatively impacts both company morale and recruiting.

?No matter how welcoming the corporate culture, it cannot overcome the societal stigma institutionalized by Proposition 8 and similar laws,? the companies will argue, according to a copy of the brief provided by Orrick Herrington Sutcliffe LLP, the law firm representing the group.

This filing is one of many recent actions by this group and others designed to sway judicial opinion in favor of gay marriage. As for Apple in particular, they have a history of supporting this cause. When Proposition 8 was on the ballot in 2008, Apple issued a statement in support of same-sex marriage, asking voters to reject the measure. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case on March 26, with a decision expected in June of this year.

Ultrasound reveals autism risk at birth

Monday, February 25, 2013

Low-birth-weight babies with a particular brain abnormality are at greater risk for autism, according to a new study that could provide doctors a signpost for early detection of the still poorly understood disorder.

Led by Michigan State University, the study found that low-birth-weight newborns were seven times more likely to be diagnosed with autism later in life if an ultrasound taken just after birth showed they had enlarged ventricles, cavities in the brain that store spinal fluid. The results appear in the Journal of Pediatrics.

"For many years there's been a lot of controversy about whether vaccinations or environmental factors influence the development of autism, and there's always the question of at what age a child begins to develop the disorder," said lead author Tammy Movsas, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at MSU and medical director of the Midland County Department of Public Health.

"What this study shows us is that an ultrasound scan within the first few days of life may already be able to detect brain abnormalities that indicate a higher risk of developing autism."

Movsas and colleagues reached that conclusion by analyzing data from a cohort of 1,105 low-birth-weight infants born in the mid-1980s. The babies had cranial ultrasounds just after birth so the researchers could look for relationships between brain abnormalities in infancy and health disorders that showed up later. Participants also were screened for autism when they were 16 years old, and a subset of them had a more rigorous test at 21, which turned up 14 positive diagnoses.

Ventricular enlargement is found more often in premature babies and may indicate loss of a type of brain tissue called white matter.

"This study suggests further research is needed to better understand what it is about loss of white matter that interferes with the neurological processes that determine autism," said co-author Nigel Paneth, an MSU epidemiologist who helped organize the cohort. "This is an important clue to the underlying brain issues in autism."

Prior studies have shown an increased rate of autism in low-birth-weight and premature babies, and earlier research by Movsas and Paneth found a modest increase in symptoms among autistic children born early or late.

Green Energy?s Past and Future

10:00

It?s easy to view the evolution from ?horse-drawn carriage to jetliner as a straight line of increasing energy consumption, but Atlantic editor Alexis Magrigal tells us that?s not the case. In this hour, Madrigal will discuss his book,?Powering the Dream: The History and Promise of Green Technology, in which he investigates why so many alternative energy projects have been abandoned, and the opportunities that lie ahead.

The Chromebook Pixel: A Beautiful Premium Laptop For Those Who Live In The Cloud (But Not For Anyone Else)

chromebook_pixelThe Chromebook Pixel is the best Chromebook ever made. As with all Chromebooks, that may mean nothing to you if you don't like ChromeOS, but there can be little doubt that the Pixel is a beautiful piece of precision engineering that feels like a premium laptop that wouldn't be out of place in any line-up of $1,000+ laptops. And that's before you even look at the 12.86" touchscreen with the unusual, but very useful, 3:2 aspect ration, which beats Apple's Retina displays in terms of pixel density.

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama said Friday that about 100 American troops have been deployed to the African nation of Niger. Two U.S. defense officials said the troops would be setting up a base for unarmed drones to conduct?surveillance.

Obama announced the deployment in a letter to Congress, saying that the forces ?will provide support for intelligence collection and will also facilitate intelligence sharing with French forces conducting operations in Mali, and with other partners in the?region.?

The move marks a deepening of U.S. efforts to stem the spread of al-Qaida and its affiliates in the volatile region. It also underscores Obama?s desire to fight extremism without involving large numbers of U.S. ground?forces.

The drone base will allow the U.S. to give France more intelligence on the militants its forces have been fighting in Mali, which neighbors Niger. Over time, it could extend the reach not only of American intelligence-gathering but also U.S. special operations missions to strengthen Niger?s own security?forces.

One of the two U.S. defense officials who discussed the development confirmed the American troops would fly drones and other surveillance platforms from Niger military airstrips, tracking militant and refugee movement inside Mali and around the border. The U.S. will share that intelligence with Niger?s military, the official?said.

The drones at the Niger base will be unarmed and used for surveillance, not airstrikes. Still, the development of a base in Niger raises the possibility that it could eventually be used for launching?strikes.

Obama said in his letter to Congress that the U.S. forces have been deployed with the consent of Niger?s?government.

Last month, the U.S. and Niger signed a status-of-forces-agreement spelling out legal protections and obligations of American forces that might operate in Niger in the?future.

Africa is increasingly a focus of U.S. counterterrorism efforts, even as al-Qaida remains a threat in Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere. Last month?s terrorist attack on a natural gas complex in Algeria, in which at least 37 hostages and 29 militants were killed, illustrated the threat posed by?extremists.

A number of al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremist groups operate in Mali and elsewhere in the Sahara, including a group known as al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, which originated in Algeria and is active in northern Mali. Last month, French forces intervened to stop the extremists? move toward Mali?s?capital.
