Ten Clean Energy Technologies the U.S. Military Needs to Win the Next Naval War

USS Zumwalt - DDG-1000The future seems bleak for sea pirates, terrorists, tyrants and any other brigand or bully in the bad guy business. Courtesy of Uncle Sam?s Canoe Club, the good guys are about to get faster, stronger and more agile. And yes, clean energy is the secret sauce.

?By 2016, the Navy will sail the Great Green Fleet, a carrier strike group composed of nuclear ships, hybrid electric ships running biofuel and aircraft flying on biofuel,? according to energy targets set in 2010 by the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus.

The U.S. Navy?s focus on reducing dependency on fossil fuels is part of a broader plan for developing and deploying next-generation naval warfare capabilities that represents the dawn of a new era for naval engineering. This new era will need to meet the massive power demands of ship installed weapons and sensor systems capable of burning and blinding optical systems, cutting off an airplane?s wing and hurling projectiles more than 200 nautical miles at speeds of greater than Mach 7.

The U.S. Navy?s Office of Naval Research is developing a suite of hypersonic and directed energy weapons and sensors that will bring the fight to enemy forces far outside the counterattack envelope.

While some of these weapon and sensor systems like the Electromagnetic Railgun or the Free Electron Laser are at least a decade away, the Laser Weapon System and Air and Missile Defense Radar systems are almost ready for prime time deployment today.

?Our bottom line is that if we can put millions of joules of energy onto a target, something will happen,? said Capt. Roger D. McGinnis, director of the Navy?s directed energy and electric weapons program, in an interview with the Navy League.

The migration from ?Navy Now? to ?Next Navy? warships will blur the distinction between weapons and power systems and, in the process, trigger tidal waves in electric power innovation.

In a series of posts over the next month, Clean Beta will review the mission critical role of ten green and clean energy technologies in next generation naval warfare, including unmanned underwater submarines, hybrid propulsion systems, high-powered microwaves and electromagnetic rail guns. The first item on the agenda is what the Navy calls ?Next Generation Integrated Power Supply,? what civilians call the microgrid and what I call the future of electric power.

MyVR Raises $1.4M From SV Angel, Chris Dixon To Attack The $85B Vacation Rental Industry

Screen shot 2012-09-28 at 2.05.02 AMThanks to the HomeAways and Airbnbs of the world, more and more people are looking to rent their apartments and homes. There are currently some six million active vacation rentals in the U.S. and Europe, and this number is growing. However, the problem is that the vast majority of vacation rental owners aren't taking advantage of the available technology to market, manage or share their properties. MyVR, a San Francisco-based startup that graduated from Y Combinator in March, sees a big opportunity to help owners and operators alleviate the offline pain of managing their vacation rentals and help bring them new (or at least more regular) business.

Biden: Days into job, news of $1 trillion deficit

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden says that he and President Barack Obama had been on the job less than a week when a top economic adviser told them the country was facing a trillion-dollar budget deficit.

Biden says that Obama replied, "But I haven't done anything yet."

Biden blames the deficit on the previous Bush administration, adding that it "put two wars on a credit card" and gave tax cuts to the wealthy after inheriting a balanced budget and revenue surplus from the Clinton administration.

Biden hammered GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney for comments on a leaked video in which Romney describes 47 percent of Americans as paying no federal income tax and believing "they are victims."

Biden made his remarks Saturday to more than 2,000 people in Fort Myers, Fla.

New Edition of Definitive (Two-Volume) Resource in Stem Cells Released Today ?Handbook of Stem Cells? 2nd Edition Co-edited by ? Robert Lanza, M.D., ACT?s Chief Scientific Officer?????? 09/28 08:30 AM

    ?

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.?(BUSINESS WIRE)? Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. (ACTC:$0.0765,$-0.0004,-0.52%) , a leader in the field of regenerative medicine, announced today that its chief scientific officer, Robert Lanza, M.D. and Anthony Atala, M.D., W.H. Boyce Professor and Director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, have released the second edition of Handbook of Stem Cells(Academic Press/Elsevier), the widely-recognized definitive resource in the field of stem cells. It includes a Forward by Professor Sir Martin Evans, Ph.D., FRS, co-winner of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2007. Sir Martin is credited with discovering embryonic stem cells and is considered one of the chief architects of the field of stem cell research. The two-volume set also includes contributions from dozens of stem cell pioneers, including James Thomson, Shinya Yamanaka, Doug Melton, Janet Rossant, and Robert Langer (a member of ACT?s board of directors), among others, as well as patient advocate Mary Tyler Moore. Handbook of Stem Cells, Second Edition follows a very successful edition published in 2004. The first edition was the first comprehensive body of work dedicated entirely to the stem cell field. The two-volume set quickly became the most relevant textbook in the stem cell arena. Now, several years later, major advances have occurred, with entirely new classes of stem cells being described. The description of induced pluripotent cells in the last few years brought many more avenues of research and discovery. In 2012, the first paper reporting results of two patients treated with human embryonic stem cells was published by ACT and its collaborators. It might seem that we have waited too long to finally see pluripotent stem cells in the clinic. However, this has been accomplished with incredible speed when it is considered that hESCs were first isolated just 14 years ago. Handbook of Stem Cells integrates this exciting area, combining in two volumes the requisites for a general understanding of both adult and embryonic stem cells. Organized in two volumes, Pluripotent Stem Cells and Adult & Fetal Stem Cells, this work contains contributions from the world?s experts in stem cell research to provide a description of the tools, methods, and experimental protocols needed to study and characterize stem cells and progenitor populations as well as a the latest information of what is known about each specific organ system. ?The Handbook of Stem Cells, edited by Robert Lanza and colleagues, is an ambitious new text that achieves extraordinary completeness and inclusiveness,? wrote Steve Goldman of University of Rochester Medical Center in NATURE CELL BIOLOGY about the first edition. ?[...] the editors have succeeded in putting together a reference that is broad enough in scope, but sufficiently detailed and rigorous, to be of real interest to both new and seasoned investigators in the field [...] In providing this treatise, which covers the history, biology, methods and applications of stem cells, the editors and authors have succeeded in establishing a conceptual framework and a common language for the field. In so doing, they have ensured that this two-volume set will serve as a benchmark reference in stem cell biology for years to come.? Writing about the first edition in the Times Higher Education Supplement, Ian Wilmut added, ?These books make an invaluable contribution to the education of researchers and clinicians both of the present day and of the future. They should be available in libraries of all biology and medical schools as well as those of companies and research institutions.? About Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. Immigration Charges For Accused Commando In Dos Erres Massacre

U.S. federal officers took custody of Jorge Vinicio Sosa Orantes in Calgary Friday morning and were en route to Los Angeles, U.S. officials said. Sosa, 54, is the highest-ranking officer to have been arrested on charges alleging direct involvement in the massacre by a 20-man unit of elite commandos in the northern Guatemalan farming hamlet of Dos Erres.

In May, ProPublica reported?the story of Oscar Alfredo Ram?rez Casta?eda, who learned only last year that he was a Dos Erres survivor. He had been abducted by a commander of the unit and raised by his family.

Sosa, a karate instructor who holds both U.S. and Canadian citizenship, fled his home in the Los Angeles area in mid-2010 as agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) closed in on him. He went to Mexico and then to Lethbridge in western Canada, where he has family, and was arrested in January of last year, according to U.S. and Canadian court documents. Last month, a Canadian appeals court ended his legal fight to avoid extradition to the United States.

Because U.S. courts do not have jurisdiction for the massacre, federal prosecutors indicted Sosa on charges of lying on immigration forms. He allegedly concealed his military service and involvement in Dos Erres on the forms when he obtained citizenship in 2008 and residency 10 years earlier, according to an indictment filed in 2010. The trial could start in about two months in federal court in Riverside, Calif.

In Dos Erres, Sosa allegedly oversaw the slaughter of men, women and children who were dumped in a well during a day-long frenzy of torture, rape and pillage, according to U.S. and Guatemalan court documents. He allegedly fired his rifle and threw a grenade into a pile of living and dead victims in the well, according to the testimony in Guatemalan courts of two former soldiers who are now protected witnesses.

Sosa was a sub-lieutenant at the time, junior in rank only to three lieutenants in the squad of highly-trained commando instructors. Sosa denied guilt during a recent telephone interview with ProPublica from jail in Calgary. He said he was in another village doing a military public works project on the day of the massacre in December 1982. He described the charges against him as the product of a conspiracy.

The Dos Erres case was one of the worst of hundreds of massacres during Guatemala?s 30-year civil war, which ended in 1996 and resulted in more than 200,000 deaths. In ?Finding Oscar: Massacre, Memory and Justice in Guatemala,? ProPublica told the story through the odyssey of Oscar Ram?rez Casta?eda, now a 33-year-old father of four living in Boston. After a dogged investigation by Guatemalan prosecutors, Oscar learned last year that his life until that point had been based on a lie.

DNA tests proved that when Oscar was age 3 and living in the village, a commando lieutenant spared his life and abducted him after the unit killed the boy?s mother and eight brothers and sisters. The lieutenant died in an accident months later, but his family raised Oscar as if he were one of their own. Oscar, an illegal immigrant who came to the United States in 1998, is now a father of four and works two full-time jobs.

After he learned that he was living proof the massacre, Oscar applied for political asylum. A decision is pending. He met in recent months with a prosecution team from the U.S. Department of Justice and is prepared to tell his story as a witness against Sosa, according to his lawyer, R. Scott Greathead.

?Oscar is ready to provide them with whatever assistance they need,? said Greathead. ?The Sosa prosecution is very significant. It represents an important law enforcement effort on the part of the U.S. government to punish human rights abusers who make false representations to the U.S. government to get asylum and citizenship.?

A key eyewitness will likely be Santos Lopez Alonzo, a former member of the commando unit. Alonzo abducted and raised a 5-year-old boy from Dos Erres who, like Oscar, had survived the attack. Alonzo migrated illegally to Texas, where he was arrested in 2010 for illegal re-entry after deportation and offered to testify against other Dos Erres suspects, according to court documents. He was sentenced to time served and is in federal custody as a material witness, according to court documents.

The prosecution?s approach to the Sosa case resembles the investigation of Gilberto Jordan, a former commando who was tracked down in Florida by ICE agents in 2010. Jordan confessed his role in the massacre and pleaded guilty to similar immigration charges. Jordan received the maximum 10-year sentence and is serving time in federal prison.

U.S. authorities deported to Guatemala another former commando who was arrested in California. He became one of five suspects in the case who were convicted by Guatemalan courts. Seven suspects, including the two senior officers in the unit, remain at large.

The suspects were first charged in Guatemala in 2000, but the case remained in limbo because of legal appeals and political resistance by the powerful armed forces. The?hunt for the killers?in Guatemala and the United States began in earnest in 2010 as the result of a ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the appointment of Attorney General Claudia Paz y Paz, who has aggressively pursued war crimes and corruption.

Dos Erres is the first massacre of the civil war to result in convictions in Guatemala. It has become a test of the capacity of that nation?s embattled justice system to confront impunity and lawlessness. Prosecutors have also charged Gen. Efrain Rios Montt, Guatemala?s former dictator, in the Dos Erres case.

Columbia Records came up with a solution to saving the music ...

After an exhaustive 72-month long search in which we literally sacrificed the best years of our young lives combing through and examining reams and reams of articles, spread sheets and op-eds, and wading through countless more hours of supposed expert opinions miring us in endless conjecture on the subject, we finally found the simple solution for saving the music industry. Wouldn't you know it, right when we gave up the ghost, there it was, plain as the nose on your face, in a box tucked away in our crawl space sandwiched between two other random CDs that have likewise been out of sight and out of mind for more than a decade. Who would've thought that Columbia Records had the answer all along?

See also: Train at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, 9/19/12

Yessir! There you have it: the simple solution to a vexing problem in thirteen words. We're not the brightest bulbs in the box, but if the once almighty music overlords put their fucking money where their mouth is instead of wringing their hands and wracking their brains about surviving in the digital era, problem solved. That simple, yes? What if every album came with a guarantee like this? You love it or your money back? Or what if a band offered the same sort of qualitative assurance?

That would mean bands would strive to write better music, and A&R reps would have to be more discerning with the music they endorsed, only putting forth things they truly believed in, music that moved them rather than mass-produced, homogenized pablum they trade in these days. (Yes, we're well aware of the irony that this guarantee was affixed to a CD from Train, which many folks would agree fits that qualifier.)

Of course, you're always going to have the requisite assholes who buy the disc, burn it and then return it. There's no accounting for that. But if the music truly resonates, folks will hold on to it. It will move with them. They'll save it from a fire. Doubt it? Try to find a used copy of A Love Supreme on vinyl sometime.

In this case, Columbia -- or, more specifically, Don Ienner -- believed in this record, so much so that the label was willing to underwrite fans' investments. Well, for a limited time, until September 30, 2001, that is. If you didn't notice, there was an expiration date on that shit. You bet there was. Ienner was no dummy.

According to the band's recent Behind the Music episode, Ienner recognized the song's potential immediately after hearing just a rough demo. He must've also anticipated that by fall, six months after the record was released, radio would play the living hell out of the album's title track until everybody in the country was literally sick to death of hearing Train, and would subsequently demand all of their money back, along with reparations for any associated pain and suffering.

So there you have it, the simple solution to saving the music industry.

If all else fails, two words: picture discs.

Oil giant's CEO: Risks of Arctic drilling too high

    By NBC News wire services

LONDON -- Energy companies should not drill for crude oil in Arctic waters because the environmental risks are too high, Total SA Chief Executive Officer Christophe de Margerie told the Financial Times?on Wednesday.

The newspaper, which operated behind a pay wall, described de Margerie's comments as the first time a major oil company has publicly criticized offshore exploration in the Arctic.

The risk of an oil spill in such an environmentally sensitive area was simply too high, according to de Margerie.

"Oil on Greenland would be a disaster. A leak would do too much damage to the image of the company," he said.

Earlier this month, Gazprom OAO delayed the start of oil production at its Prirazlomnoye field, the first Russian Arctic offshore oil deposit to be developed, due to safety concerns.

A report from the National Snow and Ice Data Center shows the Arctic's melting ice is resulting in the lowest sea ice levels since satellites started tracking the measurements in 1979. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

The Arctic is seen as a key source in the next decade for Russia, the world's largest oil producer.

Plans to drill for crude in the Arctic have raised concerns among environmental activists, who launched protests last month at the offshore platform that operates the Gazprom project.

Shell admits Arctic drilling defeat, for now

Earlier this month Royal Dutch Shell PLC had to abandon hope of drilling into oil reservoirs in the Chukchi Sea off Alaska after its containment dome was damaged during tests.

Environmentalists pointed to those setbacks as more evidence that offshore drilling in the Arctic is too risky.

Sen. Mark Begich, (D-AK), discusses what a delay in Arctic drilling means for the future of oil prices and exploration in the U.S.

"Letting Shell do top-hole drilling and other preparatory activities when they are clearly not ready to respond to an oil spill is like telling a drunk driver that as long as he stays off the freeway everything should be OK," said Rebecca Noblin, Alaska director of the Center for Biological Diversity, after Shell won approval to carry out additional preliminary drilling off Alaska -- this time in the Beaufort Sea.

    More environment news on NBCNews.com

The remoteness, the extreme cold and the threat from ice floes crushing equipment pile more costs on top of those imposed by restrictions on drilling during hunting and breeding seasons and requirements for expensive emergency equipment to be on standby.

And industry executives acknowledge that the economics of Arctic exploration is also shaky.

NYT: China joins nations seeking treasure in warming Arctic

Nevertheless, Shell and other international oil and gas companies are moving into the Arctic because of increasing resource nationalism and dwindling production in their traditional heartlands of the Middle East, South America, the United States, the North Sea and elsewhere.

Persistently high oil prices are also making the huge engineering challenges of working in such a hostile environment look more worthwhile. In addition, the climate change that burning hydrocarbons contributes to has pushed back the ice, opening up access to, and markets for, the hydrocarbons there.

Arctic sea ice reaches new low, shattering record set 3 weeks earlier

The prize of success could be huge. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that some 30 percent of the world's undiscovered natural gas and 13 percent of its oil is waiting to be exploited in the Arctic.

PARIS (AP) ? Paris fashion has no boundaries and no borders.

Thursday's cultural melting pot of spring-summer 2013 shows was proof enough.

Curious designers, thirsty for new inspiration, ventured across the globe to bring new ideas and exotic cultures back to the catwalk.

Manish Arora traveled to northwestern India's Rajasthan to bring Paris a vibrant infusion of traditional Indian dress and lavish regal jewelry.

Balmain's creative nomad Olivier Rousteing, meanwhile, replaced last season's muse ? the Russian Empire's Faberge Egg ? to travel to the artisanal wicker-weavers of Cuba to give his in-vogue summer black collection a unique panache.

Barbara Bui, who also channeled black, joined the expedition with geometric American Indian prints and tribal-looking dresses and foulards.

Taking another tack, Nina Ricci, forever a romantic Parisian gamine, traveled decades back in time to produce a nostalgic show with a modern twist.

Friday's collections include Roland Mouret and Issey Miyake, as well as the debut ready-to-wear show for new Christian Dior designer Raf Simons.

    BALMAIN

To welcome in next spring, some designers in Paris have said it with flowers. Balmain said it with wicker.

Never one to travel with the crowd, 27-year-old designer Olivier Rousteing used artisanal Cuban wicker-weaving as a vehicle for his signature graphic silhouettes.

Rousteing ? who on Thursday completed a full year at the helm of the iconic French fashion house ? possesses a roving eye for cultural artifacts. Strong shouldered, highly structured looks came with cropped tops, lashings of jewel and slices of torso at his Paris Fashion Week show.

Yet the high point was the wicker-embellished cropped jackets that growled like a fierce, feminine exoskeleton.

Rousteing's 3-D woven straw evoked a baroque mood, a feeling that was echoed by lavish diamond checkerboard patterns ? a replica of the polished marble flooring of the Versailles Palace.

No doubt Rousteing will pass his annual job review.

    MANISH ARORA

India ? home to over a billion people and one of the most colorful cultures in the world ? is a limitless creative touchstone for designers. So it's surprising that Mumbai-born Manish Arora ? perhaps the subcontinent's most famous designer ? has not delved into its rich fashion encyclopedia before.

    That is until now.

Arora presented a spicy and bohemian homage to his homeland for spring-summer 2013 at Paris Fashion Week.

    But why now?

"Luckily, this year I was very attracted toward jewelry: Is there a better place to draw inspiration?" said Arora, dressed in a flamboyant gold top.

Arora took us by the bejeweled hand down a goldmine of revamped traditional Indian dress. Angrakha dresses with orange patterns were set of boldly with a shiny chainmail pant, alongside geometric prints of tigers, panthers and antelope.

However, the show was really about the jewelry, as sublime ornamentation reigned in some of the collection's more garish looks. At one point there were gasps as the Maharaja's daughter came down the catwalk: Resplendent in a standout gold face-band that circled the bottom of the eyes.

    NINA RICCI

There's been nostalgia in the air at Nina Ricci of late.

This was certainly the case in Peter Copping's deceptively complex spring-summer 2013 show at Paris Fashion Week, which floated ethereally by and matched the vintage feeling of last season's show.

Perhaps the mood was set by the millions of falling cherry blossoms ? which mark the end of spring ? that opened the presentation.

Or perhaps it was the floaty chiffon tops, the gentle pleated skirts, the halter necks, the flowing fringing or the soft silhouettes that harked to bygone days of the 20's and 30's.

Although the show opened with black designs, it melted like winter into spring, shifting into dusty colors of silver gray, blush pink, red and pale lavender.

Touches like zippers kept it modern for an accomplished, commanding show ? the most feminine display so far this season in Paris.

But Copping needn't be feeling nostalgic himself ? this collection shows he has a bright future with the fashion house.

    BARBARA BUI

"Black is back for summer," declared Barbara Bui, following her saleable, and typically feminine collection for spring-summer 2013.

The French-Vietnamese designer opened the show true to her word, with a series of sexy-looking black nappa ensembles.

Bui, known to have an eye on her youthful clientele, ticked the on-trend box with her gentle masculine tailored-jackets, which led the eye down provocatively to skintight pants or inches of leg.

Singing the spirit of spring's first bloom, Bui then let float by a diaphanous series of sheer organza blouses.

Fluttering layers and contrasting pockets endowed the cornflower blue and flesh colored looks an interesting textural play.

Unfortunately, the message of harmony got lost by the end ? diluted by a confusing series of geometric American Indian patterns with conflicting silhouettes.

Dunkin' Donuts Reveals Professions With Heaviest Coffee Drinkers

September 26, 2012 by Steven Rothberg

John Costello of Dunkin' DonutsNational Coffee Day is this coming Saturday and, according to a new survey commissioned jointly by?Dunkin? Donuts?and?CareerBuilder,?food preparation and service workers are the professions that need coffee the most, followed by scientists and sales representatives. The survey results also show that coffee plays a major role in helping professionals perk up at work, as 43 percent of those who drink coffee claim they are less productive without a cup of Joe.

For the third year in a row, Dunkin? Donuts and CareerBuilder partnered to determine the latest coffee consumption trends brewing in the U.S. workplace. The survey was conducted from August 13 to September 6, 2012 and included more than 4,100 workers nationwide.?According to the results, the professions with the highest proportions of workers stating they are less productive without coffee vary widely. Those who need coffee to get through the workday the most are:

    1. Food Preparation/Service Workers
    2. Scientists
    3. Sales Representatives
    4. Marketing/Public Relations Professionals
    5. Nurses (Nurse, Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant)
    6. Editors/Writers/Media Workers
    7. Business Executives
    8. Teachers/ Instructors (K-12)
    9. Engineering Technicians/Support
    10. IT Managers/Network Administrators

The survey also shows other ways that coffee fits into people?s ?daily grind? in the workplace. For example:

    • Let?s drink two:?Sixty-three percent (63%) of workers who drink coffee actually drink two cups or more each workday. Twenty-eight percent drink three cups or more.
    • Coffee helps younger workers in particular stay productive:?The majority of younger workers need coffee for energy and motivation, as 62% of workers aged 18 to 24 say they are less productive without coffee, with 58% of workers aged 25 to 34 making the same claim.
    • Workers in the Northeast are cup champions:?Fifty-five percent (55%) of workers claim to drink at least one cup of coffee each workday. Geographically, 64 percent of workers in the Northeast drink at least one cup per day, compared to the South at 54 percent and the Midwest and West at 51 percent.
    • Higher productivity boost for women:?Overall, 43 percent of workers who drink coffee claim they are less productive without their cup of Joe. Forty-seven percent (47%) of female workers claim they are less productive without coffee, compared to 40% of male workers.

According to John Costello, Chief Global Marketing and Innovation Officer at Dunkin? Brands, ?On National Coffee Day we celebrate the important and unique role coffee plays as a vital part of our daily lives. As these survey results show, coffee continues to become more and more essential in the workplace in particular, helping workers across all professions stay productive throughout the workday,? he said.

According to Cynthia McIntyre, Vice President of Marketing & Communications at CareerBuilder, ?There?s a reason why coffee is a staple in the workplace. Workers report that coffee fuels higher energy and productivity, and serves as a means to socialize with colleagues.?

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? A conservative fundraising group endorsed embattled Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin on Thursday and said its membership had pledged $290,000 to help replenish the Republican's financially strapped campaign against Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill.

The announcement by the Senate Conservatives Fund marks the most high-profile financial commitment Akin has received as he seeks to recover from the loss of millions of dollars of planned advertising by other national groups that aid Republicans. Those groups withdrew their support after Akin remarked last month that women's bodies have ways of averting pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape."

Akin has apologized repeatedly since then while rejecting calls from top Republicans ? including presidential nominee Mitt Romney ? to quit the race. He's hoping his campaign can gain momentum after he let pass Tuesday's final deadline to drop out of the race.

Akin, a congressman from suburban St. Louis, said he was thankful and "very enthusiastic" about winning the support of the Senate Conservatives Fund.

"I think it's logical ? I am a conservative, they're conservatives, I think it's a common-sense type of thing," Akin said during a campaign stop Thursday at the Missouri Capitol, where he began his political career as state House member in 1989.

The Senate Conservatives Fund said it endorsed Akin because he is a Republican nominee, the race against McCaskill remains competitive and Missouri is important to Republican efforts to gain the four seats necessary to win control of the Senate. The organization said it hopes to get $100,000 of the pledged money to Akin's campaign by Sunday, which is the cutoff for the quarterly financial reporting period.

The fund has gained prominence in recent years with the aid of Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., a favorite among tea party activists. Among other things, the Senate Conservatives Fund supports a ban on congressional spending earmarks, which use legislation to direct particular amounts of money to specific entities in a particular state or congressional district.

Akin has used earmarks in the past to direct funding to such things as highway projects and military armor, although he and Matt Hoskins, the executive director of the Senate Conservatives Fund, both have said Akin supports the group's ban on earmarks.

Akin said Thursday that he's against amendments that are slipped into bills at the last moment that direct money to specific projects, particularly if joint House and Senate conference committees add items that weren't in versions that originally passed the chambers. But he added: "Don't take the definition (of earmark) so broadly that the members of Congress don't have any input into the budget process."

The aid from the Senate Conservatives Fund follows Akin's endorsement Wednesday by DeMint and former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, whose Patriot Voices political action committee said it was contributing money to Akin and hiring staff to work in Missouri. The Freedom's Defense Fund, which backs conservative candidates, also said earlier this week that it planned a $250,000 advertising campaign benefiting Akin.

But Akin will need even more outside help to keep pace with Democratic-leaning groups supporting McCaskill.

Emily's List, which backs Democratic women who support abortion rights, and the Service Employees International Union issued a joint statement Thursday saying they had bought $1 million in ads in support of McCaskill to run in the state's largest TV markets of St. Louis, Kansas City and Springfield.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, which already has spent about $1 million on TV ads in Missouri, has reserved $4.3 million of additional advertising to begin running Oct. 9.

(AP) ? Entire stadiums have booed them. The Patriots' Bill Belichick grabbed one by the arm and the Redskins' Kyle Shanahan was so hopping mad he followed one into the tunnel after the game.

But it took the team that Vince Lombardi built, playing in a "Monday Night Football" headliner, to put the NFL's latest labor headache ? locked-out officials and their struggling, under-fire replacements ? front and center for the nation. Even President Barack Obama, a Bears fan slogging through a re-election campaign, weighed in Tuesday, saying, "We've got to get our refs back."

Is this where the NFL's lockout of its regular refs comes to an end? On a call that many believe cost the Packers and their Cheesehead-wearing followers a win at Seattle?

The NFL stood fast, giving no sign Tuesday that it was close to reaching a new labor pact with the referees' union. But the outrage grew beyond NFL players (risking fines for speaking out) like Falcons tight end Anthony Gonzalez, who tweeted: "How do you miss that? Pop Warner refs would have gotten that right."

LeBron James tweeted he was "sick" about it and Dirk Nowitzki said he was "not gonna watch another nfl game until real refs" return, while fans pretty much everywhere except Seattle concluded that Green Bay was robbed. Some threatened to boycott until order is restored and others tried to pull the plug on their NFL satellite television packages, only to be told that they can't cancel in the middle of the season.

"I don't really want to give them money if they're going to be greedy about things," said Packers fan Chris Kroening, who lives in Milwaukee. "It's just not that fun to watch any more. I can find better things to do on a Sunday afternoon than watch refs make bad calls."

For all their outrage, Kroening and Michael Mantuano, a Packers fan in Pine Bluff, Ark., both acknowledged that they would probably be watching on Sunday when Green Bay hosts the Saints.

"Yeah, I'm going to watch the game because I still love the Packers," Mantuano said. "But it's a bitter pill to swallow on Tuesday morning when it just clearly wasn't the right call."

It all started when Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson's last-gasp pass into the end zone appeared to be hauled down by Packers defensive back M.D. Jennings while Seahawks receiver Golden Tate also got his hands on the ball.

Two replacement officials made contrasting signals ? one indicated a touchdown, the other an interception ? and they eventually ruled on the field that Tate had simultaneous possession with Jennings, which counts as a reception by the offensive player.

    Touchdown, Seattle. Game over, Packers.

The NFL acknowledged Tuesday that Tate should have been flagged for offensive pass interference earlier on the play, which would have ended the game with a Packers victory. But league officials said the referee was correct that no indisputable visual evidence existed on a replay review to overturn the touchdown call.

The result of the game, 14-12 Seattle, was final.

That's certainly not how the Packers saw it, insisting that Jennings clearly had intercepted the pass.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers called it "awful" in his postgame interview and he didn't let up Tuesday. He called the league's conclusion "garbage" and said the officials were responsible for a "phantom" pass interference call earlier against the Packers before having "zero communication" after the final play.

"I've got to do something that the NFL is not going to do: I have to apologize to the fans," Rodgers said on his weekly radio show on ESPN 540-AM in Milwaukee. "Our sport is generated ? the multibillion-dollar machine ? is generated by people who pay good money to watch us play. And the product that's on the field is not being complemented by an appropriate set of officials.

"The games are getting out of control, and like I said in the first week, I said this, I'm OK with the replacement refs as long as they don't have a direct impact on the game," Rodgers said. "Obviously, last night, there was a direct impact on the game."

He added: "The game is being tarnished by an NFL who obviously cares more about saving some money than having the integrity of the game diminished."

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told KRLD-FM in Dallas that he didn't catch the end of the game.

"I cut it off about halftime," he said. "I just read a little note in the paper that the Seahawks pulled it out."

Packers guard T.J. Lang posted a message on his Twitter account criticizing the call, then challenged the NFL to "Fine me and use the money to pay the regular refs." On Tuesday, Lang apologized for using profanity in his posts ? but said that was the only thing he regretted.

Fellow Packers offensive lineman Josh Sitton used his Twitter account to call on the NFL to come to Green Bay and apologize to the Packers.

"The NFL needs to get the refs back (before) we strike and they make no money!" Sitton posted after the game.

Rodgers, a players' union representative during the lockout, expressed skepticism about that happening and said, "Let's remember who we're dealing with."

"We're dealing with an NFL who locked out the players and said we're going to stand firm on our position," he said on the radio show. "... This is an NFL who gambled on some low-level referees, including the guy who makes the most important call last night, who's never had any professional experience."

After the so-called "Inaccurate Reception," a small Facebook group advocated an "Occupy Lambeau" protest movement before Sunday's game against New Orleans. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker used his Twitter account to call for the return of the regular officials ? a public show of support for locked-out unionized workers, an odd juxtaposition given his national reputation for going after public employee unions last year.

For all the bluster, few expect many empty seats or unwatched television sets on NFL Sundays.

"I mean, it's not the Packers' fault," Kroening said. "I pretty much live and die by watching them."

Mantuano, the other fan, said he was concerned that a team will miss the playoffs or a star player will get hurt because of a replacement official's mistake. He wondered aloud about the health of Rodgers, Tom Brady and Tony Romo.

Oddsmakers said millions of dollars changed hands on that now-famous play.

"Due to one call by the replacement refs, the bettors lost $150 million, and the bookie won $150 million for a total swing of $300 million on one debatably bad call," said RJ Bell of Las Vegas-based Pregame.com.

3 Techniques to Fight Unemployment Stigma | CAREEREALISM

Unemployment StigmaI recently read this article on AOL Jobs that said studies show convicted felons have an easier time getting hired than the long-term unemployed. I won?t deny the facts: People who have been unemployed for an extended period of time are discriminated against.

It?s terrible, but it?s the truth.

In the last two years, I?ve worked with over 1,800 job seekers inside CareerHMO, many of whom had been out of work for a long time.

(The longest had been out of work four years!)

Here are three techniques that helped them get back to work.

    #1 ? Stop Looking for a Job

When we look for a job, we force ourselves to try to fit into an existing job description. It?s like being a size eight in shoes but trying to fit into a size five, it doesn?t feel right. I have job seekers step back and focus on a problem to solve. What challenges are businesses facing today in their industry? How does their skill set solve that problem? And above all else, how do they save or make the company enough money to justify hiring them.

#2 ? Press ?Play? on Life

Long-term job seekers have usually become quite reclusive. They don?t engage in social activities because they are sick of being asked, ?What do you do?? As a result, they stop going out. Furthermore, they punish themselves for not having a job by not allowing themselves to have any fun. They hold happiness hostage, saying to themselves, ?I can do those things when I finally get a job.? Well, withholding happiness is no way to get a job. You need to feel good about yourself in order to have the confidence and motivation needed to job search.

I tell job seekers, get out there and have fun. Meet as many people as you can. When the question, ?What do you do?? comes up, simply say, ?I specialize in solving (insert your answer from technique number one here) problems for companies,? and leave it at that.

If they ask you where you work, simply say, ?I?m actually in the job hunt right now,? and move on.

Keep it positive and simple. You?ll find people will respond to the low-key nature of how you presented your employment situation and may even ask more questions as a way to help you. Your job is to stay positive and enjoy the event. If someone wants to help you ? that?s a bonus!

    #3 ? Get a 360 Feedback Evaluation

I find a lot of folks who have been unemployed for a long time can?t really see themselves objectively. They have been in the hunt for so long, they can?t tell what?s working and what?s not. Moreover, they?ve gone back and tweaked their job search tools so many times, that they can?t see how off base they?ve made them (i.e. resume, LinkedIn profile, cover letter, etc.).

And then, there is the interview attire and the way they answer behavioral questions. Having been unemployed for so long, they are either outdated, or create a look of desperation.

In short, their personal brand (a.k.a. how they are marketing themselves) is all wrong ? and they can?t see it. I suggest they get an objective professional to do a 360 evaluation on their job search efforts.

They should have every aspect of their job search strategy and tools evaluated to see if they are A) up-to-date, and B) sending the right message. Getting this type of help can make a huge difference. The changes and improvements made as a result of the feedback usually give the job seeker new hope in their ability to find work.

#1 Piece of Advice All Ex-Unemployed People Offer

Besides the advice above, I also think it?s wise to get advice from those who have successfully beat long-term unemployment. So, each time I get an e-mail from a client who was unemployed a long time and finally found a job, I always ask them, ?Now that you did it. What?s the one piece of advice you would give someone who is where you once were.?

The answer is always the same? never give up!

They say it with such passion too. They go on to discuss how they are glad I pushed them to keep going. How, as much as they didn?t want to try new techniques, they were now glad that they did. And always, they say how grateful they were I didn?t give up on them, and more importantly, they didn?t give up on themselves.

So, I hope you?ll give the above techniques a try. You?ve got nothing to lose, right?
