Moving to the Big City from a Tiny Town

Moving to a big city like Manchester can be overwhelming if you?re used to the charms of the small English town and there are a number of issues you might want to consider to prepare for picking up sticks.

1. Make sure you research your new neighbourhood thoroughly ? you?ll want to know the culture of the area you?re moving into, as well as public transport options, population, schools and so forth. If you can, visit the city before moving and try and speak to locals.

2. Explore the city ? as above, you?ll want to know where it is you?ll be living and where it is in relation to everything else. Buy a map and set out on foot around your area to get a real bearing on where you are geographically ? find the shortest, easiest routes to and from the places you?ll want to be visiting (police/fire stations, hospitals, banks, supermarkets etc.) Don?t worry about getting lost ? that?s part of the fun and as long as you can find your way back (that?s what the map is for) you?ll be fine.

3.

Have a plan ? make sure you know exactly where you?re moving, when you?re moving and the schedule of your moving day. You might need to give the removal company directions to your new home, so it?s important to know the major routes to and from the property. Having an itinerary for your moving day will ensure that things will (mostly) go off without a hitch.

4. Get involved and meet people ? one of the hardest things to do after a big move is to meet new people and this can be especially hard in a big, anonymous city.

If you have hobbies, try to find ways to get involved with the community through them. There should be a club for pretty much every hobby imaginable in Manchester and having a common interest is a great way to make friends and meet neighbours, or you could always look at what clubs and classes are on offer and take up something new!

5. Have fun! Moving house may be a big transition, but it?s also an exciting new step in your life and there will be many opportunities to try new things, meet new people and make your mark on your new home.

If you find yourself feeling a little overwhelmed before or after the big move and you?re not sure how best to get started discovering your new home, try speaking to estate agents in Manchester who will be very knowledgeable about such thing as public services and amenities and may be able to help you settle in.
