How to Watch the Venus Transit

June 4, 2012 2:00 PM Text Size: A . A . A You won't want to miss Tuesday's transit of Venus in front of the sun?it won't come again for more than a century. NASA's website will tell you when to look depending upon where you live. Here's how to watch:

A pair of binoculars is great for watching the transit with large crowds?but do not look into the binoculars! Attach them to a tripod, position the sunlight on a white sheet of paper, and focus the binoculars until the outline of the sun is crisp.

A cardboard box capped with pinhole-poked aluminum foil can allow you to watch Venus? transit without damaging your eyes. Read the instructions here.

Do you, your friends, or family members have the hots for welding? Good. Grab those #14-shade welding glass spectacles, put them on, and look up. Just make sure they're #14s.

Finally, if you're stuck inside or simply want to watch the entire transit, see the box below for a live feed of the event. At 7pm EDT Tuesday, Dave Mosher, author of our story about how the transit will help exoplanet hunters, will discuss his story with the hosts. Click to watch.
