Ravens must avoid letdown vs Browns

Championship teams avoid letdowns after big wins.

The Baltimore Ravens know that, and they're coming off one of their most significant regular-season victories, that entertaining and dramatic squeaker against New England.

Normally, the Browns wouldn't be much of a test for the Ravens. The vitriol in this rivalry belongs to the folks in Cleveland who still consider the original Browns' move to the Inner Harbor in 1996 a betrayal. Not much hatred comes from the other side, in great part because the Browns have been a weak opponent for most of their 13 years back in the NFL.

Indeed, the Ravens (2-1) are ranked third in the AP Pro32 power rankings, while the Browns are all the way down at the bottom with an 0-3 record.

Baltimore is favored by 12 points, but remember this game Thursday night comes on the heels of that oh-so-satisfying win over the Patriots, who survived against the Ravens in the AFC title game last January. Coach John Harbaugh's team better make sure it is looking ahead, not behind.

"We have to let this one go right now. We have to move on," cornerback Lardarius Webb said.

"It's going to be tough, and we knew that," star linebacker Ray Lewis said. "So we're going to have to get healthy and get healthy real quick. Cleveland doesn't care how we feel."

All the Browns care about is getting a win, but the Ravens swept the AFC North last year and have won eight straight against Cleveland. On a short week, the experienced team usually has an edge, as the Giants proved last Thursday at Carolina.

Go with the better, more seasoned teams at home.

RAVENS, 30-10

No. 4 (tie) San Francisco (minus 3 1-2) at No. 18 New York Jets

49ers weren't ready in Minnesota. They will be primed at Meadowlands.

BEST BET: 49ERS, 17-6

No. 4 (tie) New York Giants (plus 2 1-2) at No. 12 Philadelphia

Giants showed their mettle in last two wins, Eagles are too careless.

UPSET SPECIAL: GIANTS, 23-21

No. 27 New Orleans (plus 7 1-2) at No. 7 Green Bay

Last thing you want is to face a ticked-off Packers team.

PACKERS, 37-28

No. 8 New England (minus 3 1-2) at No. 20 Buffalo

Unless, that is, it's facing a ticked-off bunch of Patriots.

PATRIOTS, 38-27

No. 17 Minnesota (plus 4 1-2) at No. 19 Detroit

Vikings a pleasant surprise so far, will test disappointing Lions.

LIONS, 28-27

No. 23 Carolina (plus 7) at No. 2 Atlanta

Some feel Falcons are NFL's best team so far. Hard to argue.

FALCONS, 31-17

No. 25 Tennessee (plus 12) at No. 1 Houston

Some feel Texans are NFL's best team so far. Hard to argue that, too.

TEXANS, 33-20

No. 28 Miami (plus 6 1-2) at No. 6 Arizona

Some feel Cardinals are NFL's best team so far. If defense keeps this up, could be.

CARDINALS, 24-10

No. 10 Chicago (plus 3 1-2) at No. 11 Dallas, Monday night

Aaron Rodgers was sacked eight times last Monday night. Jay Cutler could go down more often.

COWBOYS, 20-13

No. 13 San Diego (minus 1 1-2) at No. 24 Kansas City

Just can't trust Chargers ? not that Chiefs are anything special.

CHIEFS, 20-17

No. 9 Seattle (minus 2 1-2) at No. 29 St. Louis

If it comes down to a desperation pass on final play, go with Seattle.

SEAHAWKS, 27-13

No. 26 Oakland (plus 6) at No. 16 Denver

Steelers handed Raiders a gift. Peyton won't be so charitable.

BRONCOS, 26-24

No. 14 Cincinnati (minus 1 1-2) at No. 30 Jacksonville

Bengals beat a better Washington team on road last week.

BENGALS, 22-14

No. 21 Washington (plus 3) at No. 22 Tampa Bay

Bucs play teams tough, can handle this NFC East foe ? barely.

BUCCANEERS, 30-28

___

2012 RECORD:

Against spread: 5-10-1 (16-30-2); 7-9 (26-22)

Best Bet: 2-0-1 against spread, 3-0 straight up.

Upset special 2-1 against spread, 2-1 straight up.

Mobile App Marketing: Meet Your Mobile Market | the e of Marketing

Mobile Marketing |?m?b?l ?m?rkitiNG | What is it, exactly?

Literally, mobile marketing translates into any activity that revolves around being on the move; some think of mobile marketing as cars wrapped in brilliant colors that catch the eye of motorists. Others consider billboards, high-rise digital message panels and street hawkers as a form of mobile marketing. Most marketing strategists today consider mobile marketing a combination of campaigns that revolve around mobile devices like laptops, cell phones and iPads.

Mobile App Marketing

Most experts agree that these campaigns are designed around text and graphics to compel consumers to purchase a product or service. They also pique consumer interest and are very effective at building?brand loyalty. Building corporate awareness doesn?t always involve directly driving consumers to a retail website or neighborhood store. Sometimes it?s a subtle suggestion. Consider Charmin, the toilet paper manufacture. Charmin released an interactive application for mobile device users that locates the nearest public restroom. Users can review restroom ratings from other ?resters? and add their own opinions. How ingenious is that? We?ve all stood in line waiting for the key, just to be told there is no public restroom on property.?Charmin?s Sit or Squat?app fills a need that few other apps are going to satisfy. This is one way mobile marketing excels above TV or radio ads?it meets the customer with the message exactly when they need it.

Maribel Lopez of Lopez Research?says that it?s time to combine mobile data with big data processing and analytics in order to respond effectively to customers. By reaching out to customers through targeted advertising and responding with exceptional customer service or efficient streamlined order-on-line options, businesses can draw in the consumer and then cement the relationship. Business-to-business marketing channels are excellent venues for real-time-experiences. When communication is time sensitive, these integrated campaigns could prove highly beneficial.

Mobile application development?is expanding with technology that gives business owners and marketing managers opportunities to reach specific sectors of the population. Rather than a newspaper ad that relies on volume and hopes enough buyers happen to read the Sunday Post, mobile campaigns can be designed around apps that appeal to certain age groups, sports enthusiasts or supporters of charities. Media specialist and marketers are coming together in October 2012 for the 4th?annual Integrated Marketing Communications Conference to discuss the changing environment and keep professionals abreast of the newest trends and fading fads. Attendees to the workshop style conference are given the opportunity to engage with the speakers more freely about creative customer conversations that lead to more conversions?which is, after all, the primary reason for marketing.

Freelance marketing consultant?Luan Wise?insists now is the time for marketing strategists to seriously invest in mobile marketing and the infrastructure involved. She reminds business owners that a significant amount of website traffic now originates on a mobile device and loading times need to catch up with the traffic. She also cited a Juniper Research study that estimates by 2017 on-the-go purchases will reach $730 billion. It makes sound fiscal sense to develop and maintain apps and other mobile media to capture the expanding market.

In a recent article for?Mashable,?Joan Pan discussed the emerging sound technology that is very close to being in place for mobile marketing strategists. She discusses the interactive, audio activated technology developed by Sonic Notify. Some of the expected applications for this new sound media are receiving a thank-you note from your local barista after your morning cup of Joe and an instant coupon that appears on your smartphone while you browse the frozen food section of your local market. If you can imagine it, the time is fast approaching you can incorporate it into mobile marketing plans. Imagine pharmaceutical companies providing options for travelers to receive a three day supply of medication if they leave theirs at home, a moving company that has real time hands free communication with truck drivers so they can see if Fido followed the dog house into the truck on moving day, or a snap and shoot game from the local fast food restaurant. With the proper design tools and motivation, these are all available today.

While communications companies continue to release new interfaces to open the door for industry specific applications, marketers can reap the benefits of targeted mobile marketing. Consumers are an ever-increasing society of mobilites that depend on mobile devices to manage everything from tickets for the opera to scheduling heart surgery. It?s time to start more conversations with customers and supporters where they are?connected to a mobile device. if you don?t see it out there, this might be the best time to roll up your sleeves and design your own app to bring in traffic and build lifetime brand loyalty once they come.

Researchers call for specialty metals recycling

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? An international policy is needed for recycling scarce specialty metals that are critical in the production of consumer goods, according to Yale researchers in Science.

"A recycling rate of zero for specialty metals is alarming when we consider that their use is growing quickly," said co-author Barbara Reck, a research scientist at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

Specialty metals, which include rare earth elements such as indium, gallium and germanium, account for more than 30 of the 60 metals in the periodic table. Because they are used in small amounts for very precise technological purposes, such as red phosphors, high-strength magnets, thin-film solar cells and computer chips, recovery can be so technologically and economically challenging that the attempt is seldom made.

"Specialty metals are used in products in only small amounts, but their value typically does not provide enough incentive to invest in a complicated recovery process. Also, the technology to do so is untested," said Thomas Graedel, the study's other co-author and Clifton R. Musser Professor of Industrial Ecology.

The researchers said improved design for recycling, deposits on consumer goods, recycling targets for specialty metals and financial incentives for industry to apply state-of-the-art separation techniques and recycling technologies would improve metal recycling.

"Metals are infinitely recyclable in principle, but, in practice, recycling is often inefficient or essentially nonexistent because of limits imposed by social behavior, product design, recycling technologies and the thermodynamics of separation," said Reck.

The researchers said that modern technology has produced a conundrum. The more intricate the product and the more diverse the materials it uses, the better it's likely to perform but the more difficult it is to recycle.

The benefit to recycling metals, they said, includes the potential to reduce the extraction of virgin ores, thus extending the life of those resources. The environmental impacts of metal production are reduced substantially when recycled materials, rather than primary materials, are used, and recycling a metal is generally much more energy-efficient than acquiring it from a mine.

"Depending on the metal and the form of scrap, recycling can save as much as a factor of 10 or 20 in energy consumption," Graedel said. "The situation clearly calls for international policy initiatives to minimize the seemingly bizarre situation of spending large amounts of technology, time, energy and money to acquire scarce metals from the mines and then throwing them away after a single use."

Dr. Martin Makary: Staying Healthy in the U.S. Health Care System ...

?

Virtually every hospital has a doctor on staff that is known for practicing bad medicine but his peers don't call him on it. And the body count from medical mistakes made in American hospitals would fill four jumbo jets a week, according to an essay this weekend in the Wall Street Journal by noted surgeon Martin Makary.

Makary is on staff at Johns Hopkins Hospital and previously wrote the groundbreaking book "The Checklist Manifesto," which contained a series of simple guidelines aimed at stopping surgical mistakes, which were later adopted by the World Health Organization. His new book is "Unaccountable: What Hospitals Won't Tell You and How Transparency Can Revolutionize Health Care."

In his essay this weekend in the Journal Makary says there is a "distrubing closed door culture" in American medicine and that doctors in hospitals routinely cover up or ignore the mistakes of colleagues. As often as 40 times a week across the country a surgeon operates on the wrong body part, he writes.?

"Roughly a quarter of all hospitalized patients will be harmed by a medical error of some kind. If medical errors were a disease, they would be the sixth leading cause of death in America?just behind accidents and ahead of Alzheimer's," Makary says in his essay. "The human toll aside, medical errors cost the U.S. health-care system tens of billions a year. Some 20% to 30% of all medications, tests and procedures are unnecessary, according to research done by medical specialists, surveying their own fields. What other industry misses the mark this often?"

The solution he writes, is for health care consumers to become better at checking into the background of their doctors and for the medical community itself to hold each accountable.

Eastern Comes Back to Beat Idaho State 2-1 - SWX Right Now ...

by EWU Athletics

In its second game of Big Sky Conference play, the Eastern Washington University women's soccer team tasted victory once again.

The Eagles outlasted Idaho State on Sunday (Sept. 23) for a 2-1 win at the EWU Sports and Recreation Center Soccer Field in Cheney, Wash. The Bengals struck early and took a 1-0 lead, but were unable to hold on, as the Eagles added two goals of their own.

The game-winning goal was scored at the 51 minute mark. Eastern's Cassie Black rocketed off an open shot that found the back of the net. The unassisted goal was the third game-winner of the season for the sophomore forward from Battle Ground, Wash. Black has recorded five goals in 2012, and 11 in her career.

"Cassie's goal could not have been more perfect," said head coach George Hageage. "She blasted it and put it perfectly on frame. She has been working hard and she is doing well, so it was great to see her get a goal like that."

In the first half, Idaho State controlled the kick-off. The Bengals quickly worked the ball down the field to Amanda Ellsworth, who slipped it in the goal for a 1-0 lead after just 22 seconds had elapsed.

"The message we have been preaching is how to face adversity," said Hageage. "That was adversity ? giving up a really simple ball so early in the game and suddenly they put it in the back of the net."

The Eagles did not let the early goal discrepancy put them out of the game though, and responded 24 minutes later with a goal from senior Kasey McNeill. McNeill connected on a pass from Black and netted it for a 1-1 tie at the half. It was McNeill's second goal of the season, and fourth of her career. Black's assist was her second this season.

"It was great to see Kasey get a goal to equalize it," said Hageage. "I think all our forwards did well holding the ball and finding players. We also saw good things from the midfield. Brittney Conway came back strong and got her legs back under her. She and Katy Allen were a big part of controlling the midfield today."

Eastern's defense had a strong showing in today's victory, only allowing the Bengals to make 14 shooting attempts all game.

"We are talking about being stronger," said Hageage. "In the past, if we give up a goal like we did, our heads go down, and we are done. But we fought back and limited their scoring opportunities. It was great to see Brianna [Brannan] and Katie Cashman do so well in the center back. And Nathalie is also playing great. Now for our next games, we just need to work on possession and not becoming so panicked once we gain a lead."
