Son of Jazz star Malone to play football at LSU

Updated: March 31, 2012, 9:56 PM ET

By David Helman | GeauxTigerNation

BATON ROUGE -- It was a safe bet heading into the weekend that LSU would pick up some commitments from its 2012 spring game. That proved to be true on Saturday.

The latest commit to join LSU's ranks for its 2013 class is offensive guard Karl Malone Jr. out of Cedar Creek School in Ruston, La. The son of NBA legend Karl Malone, Malone Jr. (or K.J.) let the LSU coaching staff know he was on board after Saturday's spring game, according to his high school coach Ben Haddox.

"He committed with coach (Les) Miles this afternoon, about an hour and a half ago, probably," Haddox said. "It's something he's been thinking about. There's a lot of pressure on these kids, at 16 years old, to make these kinds of decisions, and I think that's been weighing on him. However, he has handled it great."

At 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, Malone Jr. looks likely to be a monstrous addition to one of the SEC's biggest offensive lines. As a part of the Tigers' dozens of big-name visitors this weekend, Haddox said Malone Jr. wasn't necessarily intent on committing Saturday, but the trip swayed him.

"He came in today open-minded, wanting to keep his options open," Haddox said. "But I think once he got down here and had the experience he had today, he just felt like this is where he wanted to be."

Haddox said it was actually the input of some of LSU's past and present offensive linemen that helped Malone Jr. make his decision.

"I can't say enough about the LSU staff and the support staff today -- (former center and current LSU graduate assistant) Ben Wilkerson and (tackle) Chris Davenport have just been great guys to talk to today," Haddox said. "They had a lot of information and advice, and I know (Malone Jr.) took everything they had to say to heart. Ben is actually still hanging out with us right now and talking to K.J., and they've just been real great in this process."

Malone Jr.'s pledge gives LSU its eighth overall commitment, and the Tigers' second along the offensive line, to go along with guard Josh Boutte. After true freshman tackle Vadal Alexander put on a show during Saturday's scrimmage, it looks like Malone Jr.'s commitment gives the Tigers a hefty set of building blocks for the future.

Neutrino speed study head quits

The head of an experiment that appeared to show subatomic particles travelling faster than the speed of light has resigned from his post.

Prof Antonio Ereditato oversaw results that appeared to challenge Einstein's theory that nothing could travel faster than the speed of light.

Reports said some members of his group, called Opera, had wanted him to resign.

Earlier in March, a repeat experiment found that the particles, known as neutrinos, did not exceed light speed.

When the results from the Opera group at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory in Italy were first published last year, they shocked the world, threatening to upend a century of physics as well as relativity theory - which holds the speed of light to be the Universe's absolute speed limit.

The experiment involved measuring the time it took for neutrinos to travel the 730km (450 miles) from Cern laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland to the lab in Italy.

Call for caution

Speaking at the time, Professor Ereditato added "words of caution" because of the "potentially great impact on physics" of the result.

"We tried to find all possible explanations for this," he said.

"We wanted to find a mistake - trivial mistakes, more complicated mistakes, or nasty effects - and we didn't.

"When you don't find anything, then you say 'well, now I'm forced to go out and ask the community to scrutinise this'."

Despite the call for caution, the results caused controversy within the world of physics.

If the findings had been confirmed, they would have disproved Albert Einstein's 1905 Special Theory of Relativity.

Earlier this month, a test run by a different group at the same Italian laboratory recorded neutrinos travelling at precisely light speed.

Sandro Centro, co-spokesman for the Icarus collaboration, said that he was not surprised by the result.

"In fact I was a little sceptical since the beginning," he told BBC News at the time.

"Now we are 100% sure that the speed of light is the speed of neutrinos."

So far, Professor Ereditato has not commented on his decision to step down from his post.

When your appliances fail or become outdated, you may be thinking that it?s time to spruce up that kitchen with new cabinetry and some new countertops and flooring. There are many types of home improvement jobs people attempt to do for many reasons. Before you pull out that tape measure, though, take a few minutes to read these tips.

If you are trying to add a light outdoors, try going with an outdoor motion detector light. If you install an outdoor motion detector light, it will only come on when there is motion outside. This will help with saving energy since your light will not be running all the time.

Kitchen cabinets can be extremely heavy. Make them lighter by removing the doors and drawers from all of your new cabinets before installing them. The lighter cabinets will be easier to maneuver and there will be nothing to get in your way as you screw the cabinets to the wall.

If your kitchen cabinets are looking a little bland. you can add new cabinet knobs to create a new living environment that sparkles. Kitchen knobs are relatively expensive. Knobs come in a variety of colors, giving you the ability to personalize your kitchen in a very cute way. Create a happy home today with new kitchen knobs.

A great home improvement tip that will give a great feel to your home is to place wooden panels all throughout your living room. This will give your living room an extra homey feel, and you?ll find yourself wanting to spend even more time in front of your television set.

When thinking about replacing the cabinets in your home, look to wood cabinets. They are strong and can withstand a lot of wear and tear. Cherry, oak and maple are common woods that are used for cabinets. All of these can be stained, so if you feel like changing the color, it is easy to do so.

Hire a chimney swift to regularly clean and inspect your chimney. This is particularly important if you burn wood but even more conventional heat sources need a clean operable chimney to effectively vent. You don?t want toxic fumes building up in your house and you certainly don?t want a chimney fire!

You need to be informed with anything you attempt to accomplish in life, and this definitely holds true for home improvement. The last thing you need to do is to mess something up in your home. Pay attention to what you learned in this article and use these tips for your next improvement job.

UK's National Media Museum opens permanent 'Life Online' gallery

Image
Planning to be in the neighborhood of Bradford, England anytime soon? Then you may want to set aside some time for a visit to the National Media Museum, which will tomorrow officially open what's being described as the "world's first gallery dedicated to exploring the social, technological and cultural impact of the internet." Dubbed "Life Online" the new gallery will feature one permanent section focused on the history of the internet, and another section that will change each year and feature different "experimental themes" commissioned by artists -- the first being an examination of the open source movement. As the BBC reports, that's the result of some £2 million in funding, as well as contributions from the likes of Vint Cerf, who's featured in some of the videos produced for the exhibit (you can see those at the YouTube link below).

Less resistance can sometimes be better than more -- at least in a freshwater lake

When battling a deadly parasite epidemic, less resistance can sometimes be better than more, a new study suggests.

A freshwater zooplankton species known as Daphnia dentifera endures periodic epidemics of a virulent yeast parasite that can infect more than 60 percent of the Daphnia population.

During these epidemics, the Daphnia population evolves quickly, balancing infection resistance and reproduction.

A new study reveals that the number of vertebrate predators in the water and the amount of food available for Daphnia to eat influence the size of the epidemics and how these "water fleas" evolve during epidemics to survive.

The journal Science published the results in this week's issue. The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the James S. McDonnell Foundation supported the research.

"This study is a great example of why the most obvious response to disease, increased resistance, may not be the best solution," says Saran Twombly, program director in NSF's Division of Environmental Biology.

"When populations are stressed by other factors such as food or predators, remaining susceptible to a disease is the best route to long-term success."

The study shows lakes with high nutrient concentrations and lower predation levels exhibit large epidemics, and the yeast in the water, Metschnikowia bicuspidata, has less effect on Daphnia as the Daphnia become more resistant to infection.

However, in lakes with fewer resources and high predation, epidemics remain small and Daphnia evolve increased susceptibility to the parasite.

"It's counterintuitive to think that hosts would ever evolve greater susceptibility to virulent parasites during an epidemic, but we found that ecological factors determine whether it is better for them to evolve enhanced resistance or susceptibility to infection," said the paper's lead author Meghan Duffy, a biologist at Georgia Tech.

"There is a trade-off between resistance and reproduction because any resources an animal devotes to defense are not available for reproduction. When ecological factors favor small epidemics, it is better for hosts to invest in reproduction rather than defense."

In addition to Duffy, also contributing to this study are Indiana University biologists Spencer Hall and David Civitello; Christopher Klausmeier, a plant biologist at Michigan State University; and Georgia Tech researchers Jessica Housley Ochs and Rachel Penczykowski.

For the study, the researchers monitored the levels of nutritional resources, predation and parasitic infection in seven Indiana lakes on a weekly basis for a period of four months.

They calculated infection prevalence on live hosts using established survey methods, estimated resources by measuring the levels of phosphorus and nitrogen in the water, and assessed predation by measuring the size of uninfected adult Daphnia.

The researchers also conducted infection assays in the laboratory on Daphnia collected from each of the seven lake populations at two time points: in late July before epidemics began and in mid-November as epidemics waned

The assays measured the zooplankton's uptake of Metschnikowia bicuspidata and the infectivity of the yeast once consumed.

The infection assays showed a significant evolutionary response of Daphnia to epidemics in six of the seven lake populations.

The Daphnia population became significantly more resistant to infection in three lakes and significantly more susceptible to infection in three other lakes.

The hosts in the seventh lake did not show a significant change in susceptibility, but trended toward increased resistance.

In the six lake populations that showed an evolutionary response, epidemics were larger when lakes had lower predation and higher levels of total nitrogen.

"Daphnia became more susceptible to the yeast in lakes with fewer resources and higher vertebrate predation, but evolved toward increased resistance in lakes with increased resources and lower predation," says Duffy.

The study's combination of observations, experiments and mathematical modeling supports the researchers' theoretical prediction that when hosts face a resistance-reproduction tradeoff, they evolve increased resistance to infection during larger epidemics and increased susceptibility during smaller ones.

Ultimately, ecological gradients, through their effects on epidemic size, influence evolutionary outcomes of hosts during epidemics.

"While the occurrence and magnitude of disease outbreaks can strongly influence host evolution, this study suggests that altering predation pressure on hosts and productivity of ecosystems may also influence this evolution," says Duffy.

The team plans to repeat the study this summer in the same Indiana lakes to look at whether the relationships between ecological factors, epidemic size and host evolution they found in this study can be corroborated.

Solve Problems For The Do it Yourselfer With These Quick Tips

If you are not a professional home improvement worker, there is always information that will help you complete your jobs. If you lack some knowledge, the improvement could turn into a catastrophe. This article will provide you with information that will help you defeat what used to be challenging home improvement ventures.

If you?re planning home improvements to create an income property, don?t skimp on drywall. It can help both sound proof your rental unit as well as create a fire barrier between floors. Drywall the ceiling to include protection on all sides, both dampening the sound of people walking above and noise from below.

Securely screw your bookcases and other tall furniture to your walls! Not only is this step an important safety precaution in fortifying your home for a potential earthquake, doing so might actually prevent a child or elderly person from knocking these tall items over on themselves and sustaining serious injuries.

If you heat with a wood stove, smoke will cause your walls to become dingy and you will need to repaint more often than if you heat with a furnace. When you do repaint, it is worthwhile to wipe the walls and ceiling down with a damp sponge to remove as much soot as possible before putting on a new coat of paint.

A great home improvement tip is to invest in motion detectors for your outdoor lighting. Motion detectors will turn lights on only when movement is detected, and will swiftly shut off when there is none. Having motion detectors on your outdoor lights will save you a lot of energy and money.

When one is wondering what they can do to their house to improve upon it building a hidden room or disguising an existing door to hide a room can be a great project. This home improvement job can not only safely hide whatever valuables one wishes but provide a creative outlet.

If you are planning a home improvement project, plan the project before you worry about the budget. Go ahead and price various options, but don?t let yourself think about what you can actually afford until you?ve picked a style. This way, you can focus on what works for you and your house, instead of focusing on the money. Most plans can be adapted to a much lower budget.

As you begin your home improvement project, take care not to demolish too quickly. You should always check the structure behind a wall or a cabinet before you tear it down. If there are electrical components involved, you may have to spend a lot of money to fix the mess that you made.

office furniture

Cover all of your home?s surfaces to keep them safe from harm when do home improvements. When painting then use a tarp to cover the floor, if you?re demolishing walls or cabinets then cover any finished surface so that there is no scratching or other damage occurs. Also cover any walls that you aren?t going to repaint.

A great way to add a new look to any room of the home is to tile or re-tile the floors. Tile flooring comes in thousands of colors and designs and is relatively inexpensive when you do it yourself. For as little as $1 a square foot, new tile floors can be an excellent home improvement project.

Making your ceiling appear higher than it is can be accomplished using two very simple tips. You can paint stripes on your wall or add a tall floor lamp. Adding this to your rooms will create an optical illusion for your eye to follow. Your eyes will be focused on following the lines which will make your ceilings appear higher than they actually are.

Are you looking for an inexpensive way to add a touch of class to your home? One great way to add a small spice of elegance to your home setup is to replace your door bell with a new one. If you do this, any one who visits will instantly get a different sense of your home.

Focus on interior lighting for your next home improvement project. If you change out your old light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Lights, you will save energy and money. These bulbs also last longer than traditional lighting choices. This is a very simple project that will have remarkable results on the amount of money you save in energy bills.

When contractors are making repairs in your home it is important for you to remain present the whole time. A lot of contracting jobs can be very difficult to redo once they are already done. If you are present while a job is being done, you do not have to worry about the job being done improperly by the contractors.

If the closets in your home are not very large, it would be a good idea for you to use organizers if you are trying to sell your home. Doing so will make the closets in your home seem much bigger and a lot of buyers will bypass homes that seem to have too little space.

If you don?t have time to take care of your lawn, or don?t want to pay to have it professionally maintained, consider putting in a low maintenance yard. This usually consists of rock beds with hearty plants that need little water. This option will cut down on maintenance time and water costs.

When you are painting your home do not forget to put a coat of primer before you put the coat or coats of paint that you intend to put. Putting primer on the area first will create a solid bond and it will help the paint adhere to the surface.

As was said earlier in the article, home improvement can turn into a great catastrophe if you do not have the knowledge necessary for some of the jobs. Now that you have the knowledge, apply it to your specific needs of home improvement. Don?t let setbacks get you down, trudge through and the practice will make you better.

Sarkozy: Toulouse slayings caused 9/11-like trauma

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

French police commandos arrested 19 people and seized weapons in Friday morning swoops on people suspected of radical Islamist activity, in several cities including Toulouse, scene of the killings of four Jews and three soldiers this month.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is waging an uphill battle for re-election in an April-May vote, said more such raids would follow.

Sarkozy said in an interview with journalists that?the trauma of the?Toulouse shooting was "very deep in our country," NBC News reported.

He said it was?"a bit?-- I don't want to compare the horrors --?a bit like the trauma that followed in the U.S. and New York after 9?11."

"We cannot leave it without making any conclusions. The Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Foreign Affairs have taken the decision to forbid a certain number of predators on French soil ....?We don't want people who have values contrary to those of the Republic being invited on French territory," Sarkozy added.

BBC News, citing a source,?reported that the arrests were not connected with the killings of seven people by Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old Frenchman, who was buried Thursday after he was cornered and shot dead by police.

David Archuleta Says (Not) Goodbye to Fans

THG's second favorite Mormon is saying goodbye.

Or not goodbye, based on the title David Archuleta has given his latest video blog.

But the former American Idol runner-up is headed off on a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at an undisclosed country and won't be around for a very long awhile to update fans on his life or career.

"It's been a very emotional last week," David says below. "It's a decision everyone knows about but it's a very personal thing and I wanted to keep it that way. So I hope you guys respect that, and you guys have so I appreciate that."

Best of luck, Archie.

Jeff Bezos To Retrieve Apollo 11 Rocket Engines

Money is only wasted if you throw it in a pile and burn it. If it gets spent on something, regardless of how silly, then it stays in circulation; somebody will be using it to buy groceries, pay the mortgage, take his kids to the doctor, etc. A bunch of people will be employed on this project, and a bunch of companies will be selling goods and services. This is exactly the kind of stuff we want rich people to be doing with their money.

Someone's going to bring up the fact that you just described the broken window fallacy, so I'll preempt it:

1) It looks like you've fallen afoul of the broken window fallacy, but
2) the broken window fallacy only has meaning if the money would otherwise have been spent on something more meaningful than fixing your metaphorical broken window. Considering that this is reality, not Metaphorland, the broken window fallacy hardly ever has bearing on any situation.

In conclusion, I think you're exactly right.

For those of us who like to be able to wager money, we know that the most exciting games of chance are the best way to do this these days. However, do keep in mind that when you add up all of the expenses that come from going to a land based casino then it is not as good of an option as a casino online would be. The good news about this particular kind of gambling is that it is actually a whole lot cheaper but it is not any less fun than the old school way to wager. In fact, for some people this is now the only way that they game because it really is a lot simpler for them to do since they can play whenever they want and stop whenever they want to. If you think about it this way, you can see that you are definitely going to be getting a good deal by choosing to go with this way of playing, plus the games are very advanced these days. For those who love roulette there are options, the same as there are for those who want to enjoy some baccarat, so you can have a blast no matter which game you prefer.

Even if you would rather not have to spend your money, you can still have fun because these sites have options that might just surprise you. That?s right, now there are a ton of different kinds of free casino games that you can try and these are certainly going to show you a great time. Making Your Real Estate Green ? Cassidy Turley FHO NewsWatch

ByJonathan Keefe, Senior Vice President

Jon-Keefe

Sustainability continues to be a hot topic with almost everyone claiming to be some shade of green, which raises the question, ?What does sustainability really mean?? In the world of commercial real estate, sustainability can be broadly categorized into two areas ? construction and operations. ??

1. Construction ? New sustainable construction, tenant fit-outs and major building renovation projects tend to receive the most visibility. In construction related sustainability, the emphasis is on the environmental impact of building the site and interior physical space, as well as the supporting equipment and fixtures. Sustainable construction focuses especially on the use of high-density or urban sites, promoting energy and water efficiency as well as using local and/or renewable materials.

2. Operations ? More recently sustainable operations are receiving greater attention. Rather than focus on environmental quality during construction, companies are looking to ?green? their operations through solutions in transportation and commuting; recycling and waste management; and achieving increased utility efficiency.

However, green construction and operations are just two legs of the sustainability stool ? the third is actual demand for the space, culminating in a lease. Today, tenants have a growing desire (and in some cases, requirement) to be in green spaces. And landlords, especially large public ones, are increasingly looking to be green and share some of the same sustainability concerns as the tenants.? Learn more about green leasing in ?What Color is Your Lease?

So what drives tenants and landlords to demand sustainability in their real estate leasing programs? By and large it is the triple bottom line: People-Planet-Profit. Tenants need their workforce (People) to be healthy and productive. They want to maximize their bottom line (Profit) and they need a secure and stable place in which to carry out their enterprise (Planet).? A company?s real estate is where the three Ps tend to converge so space use has recently found itself the central focus of corporate green programs.?

More specifically, here are some of the results landlords and tenants often enjoy from their sustainability efforts.

Tenant Benefits
- Lower operating expenses
- Higher worker productivity
- Reduced absenteeism
- Fewer sick days used
- Increased retail sales
- Improved employee retention and attraction
- Positive brand and image
- Compliance

Landlord Benefits
- Lower vacancy
- Higher rents
- Improved tenant satisfaction and retention
- Increased building value
- Easier financing/refinancing
- Lower risk
- Positive brand and image
- Compliance

A properly structured lease can enable both tenants and landlords to move towards their sustainability goals. With both parties motivated by the benefits listed above, sustainable practices can be incorporated into many spaces, and stipulated in the terms of the lease.
